John Jerman (JJ), President & Founder of Office Furniture Warehouse, is an architect by trade. While working in Atlanta around 2007, JJ received a call from a distressed client. "JJ," he said, "we have to move out of our building. There's new office furniture at the new space, and we have to find something to do with what we've got." JJ had helped design and furnish the expansive office space roughly 6 months earlier (a six-figure investment). The client continued, "and they're going to charge me $30,000 to throw it all away." JJ was floored - hundreds of thousands of dollars in new furniture was going to become hundreds of thousands of pounds of landfill waste. "Let me call you back," JJ responded. What ended up happening was a brokered deal with one of JJ's other clients to keep the furniture out of the landfill, but what really transpired was the inception of Office Furniture Warehouse. JJ realized two things in this experience - first, you really can make more money than being an architect. Second, and more importantly, that the workplace has abundant opportunities to make a sustainable impact.
