Old Barracks Museum

Description

The Old Barracks Museum, also known as Old Barracks, in Trenton, Mercer County, New Jersey, United States, is the only remaining colonial barracks in New Jersey. It is the last of five such barracks authorized by the colonial legislature in 1758 to house soldiers in the French and Indian War. It housed about 300 soldiers at a time. During the American Revolution, George Washington crossed the Delaware River to catch the Hessian garrison by surprise. In 1902, members of the Daughters of the Revolution bought part of the building to preserve it. The state bought the other part and formed a museum in 1914 which continues to be open and supported by the State of New Jersey.

"The Old Barracks Museum is an original 1758 military barracks from the French & Indian War and was used for many purposes during the American Revolution. Three galleries and guided tours are offered Monday - Saturday year-round. Special events throughout the year highlight many aspects of the site's story."

If you love learning about early American & local history, you'll enjoy the Old Barracks. The exhibits are nice & the tour guides, dressed in period clothes, know a lot about the history of the Barracks, the war & Trenton. Make sure you visit the museum & gift shop inside. There is a room with a video depicting the movement of Washington's troops during the war. Very interesting & educational!
In my opinion it's too much money for the tickets. I didn't have a good time there. I feel I gave $20 away. I could only see a small room with the French Indian War Exhibit and a small room with a boring movie. No guides were available at the time to escort me on the other rooms. I would had to wait half hour for that and I needed to check out at the hotel. And on top, no money back. Only a voucher so I could come back later no way I'm coming back...
This is a little hard to find and surrounded by the city but parking was okay when we arrived. It was however closed because they had just finished a special event. We were allowed to walk the grounds and an off duty staff did give us a little history. Amazing to think you can stand where General George Washington took command of the Continental Army.
Had a great tour guide, David. He was so informative. He knew his stuff! My husband asked questions, and David had so much information to share.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$6–10
This is a great place to go during Covid because it’s one of the few things that’s open!! You have to book your tickets ahead of time online and then show up for your designated time slot which is two hours. And let me tell you - my mom and I were there for a full two hours! We were actually the only people there and basically got a private tour the entire time! I can’t compare it to pre-Covid times as we had never been there before, but we got a thorough tour led by Asher who took us through the barracks and let us explore an exhibit, which was indoors, on our own. Then he handed us off to another guide dressed in character as a solider who told us all about his duties and fired a couples shots with his musket just for us. Then we watched a shoemaker and carpenter, in full character, for another half hour do their jobs while they told us all about them. Overall it was super thorough and very enjoyable! The staff played their parts just as if a whole crowd of people were there, except it was only two of us again, basically a private tour!. Im really glad places like this are open so people can get out during this strange time of social distancing. Take this opportunity to go visit while it’s not crowded and support this local historical site in downtown Trenton! Plus, depending on the day, you can park for free right next to the Barracks something we realized after we had already paid for parking!
Had a museum pass to visit. Walked around the place to find the entrance and all the gates were locked. The place was closed during the website times and the Facebook times posted. I called the museum and got the voicemail which didn’t mention it was closed. Please be transparent with the times you are open by having it on your website, Facebook account, and voicemail.
Staff was helpful and informative, answering all of our questions. We were very impressed by the historical accuracy of everything, including making clothing and shoes on site. Don't miss the musket demonstration! It's about way more than just the muskets.
This was a really neat experience during Patriots Week when SO many people in Period costume, and reenactors were present. It really made the place come alive!
The actors were fantastic and catered to not just the kids who we had on the field trip, but the adults who attended as well. Very fun premise to "step back in time" and act as though it were the 1770s, as well as the idea to involve the kids as much as possible. Everything was also handicap accessible, which was a huge worry although it is a tight squeeze in the halls and elevator! My favorite part was getting to watch them fire a musket blank.
Great local piece of history. Hadn't been here since I was young, took the kids on a whim and they had a great time. A few of the reenactors participated in a speed reloading contest with their muskets for a local news crew - the winner was able to fire 4 rounds in just over 1 minute.
