Great place to visit!!! I started reading Empire of the Summer Moon and was very curious to see the Parker Fort. My kids loved walking through the fort/houses and the watchtower! The admission is reasonable, however CASH only. The man said they were working on a card system and hoped it would be up and running in a few weeks. The grounds are beautiful! The people who run it are very nice! There are NO ' not touching' signs in the gift shop but the people will let you know not to touch anything if you do. Would recommend visiting in the spring/fall/winter. Watch for poison ivy out front of the entrance and out back through the low gate of the fort. We will definitely be visiting again when the weather cools a little.
Seeing the old, recreated fort was nice. The visitor center/ gift shop area gives it the low marks. They only take cash. They had a few postcards and sold used paperbacks. I was hoping for a book on Cynthia Ann Parker and her family but no.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$1–5
We love stopping here when camping at nearby Fort Parker State Park. Love the history & that you can go inside the fort and it's structures to tour it all. Take cash!! They do not accept card payments for entry fees!Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot surePrice for adult entry$1–5
We participated in a Living History event and Old Fort Parker was a great host. A must stop for people wanting to learn about 19th century Texas history.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$1–5
We have held a weekend retreat here for 18 years, and have enjoyed every minute of it. The staff is more like family to us. Enjoy one of the few places like this left in this country :
I can't help but give this place five stars simply for the story it tells and commemorates. Quite frankly, this place could use some serious funding and upgrades. There are volunteers who do what they can. But, if you're interested in Texas history, frontier history, settler/Native American conflict, what happened here and the greater narrative over time makes it worthwhile to visit this place.
I'm not really sure who owns this site that is important to Texas history. But, it could be a little better. It was hard to discern where the attack came from, how the players moved through the fort, and if the reconstruction is accurate or at least correctly oriented. That said, it's worth an hour to be there. Read Empire of the Summer Moon beforehand and the site will come alive. Also, zero discussion at the site of the Anglo reprisal on the local native americans after the massacre. I felt that would be important to share.
We had an excellent time it the Annual Muster. This is a site worth visiting and saving.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$1–5
It upsets me that the state no longer wants to help with the upkeep of the fort, but the current owners do their best to keep the entrance fee affordable for all to visit. If you do manage to make it to the fort, take the time to watch the video presentation that they have. Very informative. Well worth the trip out there. Very enjoyable day out there.
A great site to see. If you're camping at Fort Parker State Park you need to go see the Fort. $2 entry fee.
