It's a nice, peaceful little historic compound. Very pretty and well-tended, with a large courtyard, an old church, and burial ground shaded by a majestic fig tree. There's also a small history museum you can look at at the end. I spent about 45 minutes here. The admission was $25. While the place is pleasant, I feel that the value is not very good.
One of my favorite of the California Missions. I visit once a year. I didn’t go inside this time because I was doing a bike ride from Ventura to here. It’s better if you visit before noon to beat the crowds and your pictures will look better too in the early morning sunshine Visited onWeekendReservation recommendedNot sure
Visited the site and walked the gardens on the Fourth of July, preparing for watching the city fireworks display. Beautiful grounds with rose garden & Way of the Cross sculpture/mosaic garden. Restrooms close at 5:00, which made it awkward for the large number of families waiting for the fireworks display on the front lawn. I did not tour the building, as I arrived too late. Tours are 9:30-4:00. The parking lot for the mission closes at 5:00 pm. If your car gets closed in, you can still get out with a motion detector gate system at the lower gate. Beautiful setting, with view of the ocean from higher up.
A very beautiful mission that through various restorations is kept in good condition. From the books that I read before my visit, I had thought it was isolated at the top of a hill, but it is nestled in a nice residential area with a spacious community park across from the mission. The mission is still used for church services. The gift shop is relatively small but full of beautiful religious articles such as crosses, rosaries, prayer cards, clothing like hats and shirts, and books to include children's books on the missions. The museum is also a good visit, and when I went they had an exhibit with articles from the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican on display. Definitely recommend spending money for the tour to get the most from your visit. Parking is free, but depending on when you go, it can be packed. Recommend visiting if you're in the area.
Lovely historic place. Tickets to tour the inside are $25 per person- a bit on the expensive side. We chose not to. There’s not much else to see in town.
Loved this mission and the way it is maintained .. the courtyard was closed and couldn't get inside the garden .. rest of the areas were open .. for the $15 for adults , it's a quick short visit .. Carmel, San Juan Bautista etc has a little more options
A worthwhile historical landmark. The place might not dazzle you, if you've been to Cathedrals in Europe, but the church altar is worth seeing. Very peaceful and serene place. I feel the gift shop was a little tacky, but it does add a uniquely American spin to the experience! photo credit: Amarosa Photography
I could easily spend half the day at The Santa Barbara Mission, just taking in all of the history and beautiful surroundings. You immediately step into an environment that is 250 years old and rich in the interwoven histories of California, Mexico, the Franciscan Missions, the Spanish Crown, Catholicism, Native Californians, and particularly the Chumash Indians. The exhibits and presentations are a truly honest attempt at presenting the facts and many points of historical view on the intersection of these various influences and topics throughout the period since the missions were built. There's a lot to experience here, from the chapel to the cemetery to the various room exhibits and the courtyard. If you're lucky, you might even catch an interesting discussion with one of the friars!
My second time at this beautiful mission. They currently have a Sistene Chapel exhibit that we got to see that brings it to life. The history and beauty of the Santa Barbara area are amazing!
Very beautiful grounds with lots of history. We went with our charter school and were led on a tour by a very knowledgeable and engaging docent. We had a great time learning about the history of the area.
