Organ study at Hope College has been a keystone of the Music Department since the founding of the college in 1866. Former organ students have gone on to major graduate programs (University of Michigan, Notre Dame, Eastman School of Music, Cleveland Institute of Music, University of Illinois), win competitions, as well as pursue careers in church music, performance and teaching.
Dr. Huw Lewis has been Professor of Music and College Organist at Hope since 1990 as well as Director of Music and Organist at St. John's Episcopal Church in Detroit. Educated at the University of Cambridge, University of Michigan and the Royal College of Music, Dr. Lewis seeks to provide the best possible musical education to all students, no matter their background.
Hope boasts world-class facilities for organ performance and teaching including the 1929 E.M. Skinner Organ in Dimnent Chapel, the 1999 J.W. Walker & Sons Studio Organ and the 2015 Casavant Frères Op. 3903 in the Concert Hall. More information about these and other instruments at Hope is available on the Music Department webpage.
