What does it mean to live in community?
If you’ve ever driven across the bridge onto Marco Island, you’ve seen the houses dotting the canals, a community contained by the beautiful Gulf. For locals, it’s not uncommon to pass by neighbors on a beach walk or to see photographs of friends in one of the Island newspapers. Quite simply, there’s a uniqueness here.
But what happens when the unexpected strikes?
Job loss, a health crisis, and more. What happens when one of our own suddenly doesn’t know where the next meal will come from, whether the children are getting enough nourishment, and how to balance paying for medications at the sacrifice of dinners everyday?
At Our Daily Bread Food Pantry, these are a handful of the questions on which we have built our mission: We exist to share the love of Christ by reducing hunger and building relationships in our community. Our goal is to offer nourishing food choices, encouragement, and hope. The ‘how’ of what we do is built upon the example Jesus Christ offers us in Matthew 25:35.
Nourishing Food Choices: Partnering with Harry Chapin Food Bank and Midwest Food Bank, we carefully assess the nutritional gaps in the food we stock any given week. Protein and a well-balanced diet are critical. We also discern that in addition to nutritional needs, our guests may come with spiritual needs. If they choose, guests can sit down with a prayer volunteer for a listening ear and agreement in prayer.
Encouragement: Whether through partnerships with civic organizations or referrals from churches, there are several ways our guests find out we offer food. Through a streamlined intake process on pantry days, we sit one-on-one with each new guest and begin a relationship that outlasts the need. While 72% of our guests come to the pantry once or twice, we get to know them beyond pantry days. Why? Because we are a community.
Hope: We are a ‘choice pantry’ which means guests come and shop the shelves for the items their family needs and prefers, as opposed to receiving a preset bag of groceries that may not meet their needs. Additionally, as a branch of the Greater Marco Benevolence Ministry, we are able to offer financial support to guests in need. Most of all, we offer them hope of a different future and the saving love of Jesus Christ.
We thank you for considering financial partnership to build a stronger and nourished community here on Marco Island.
