PIRE merges scientific knowledge and proven practice to create solutions that improve the health, safety and well-being of individuals and communities.
PIRE has a rich blend of grant and contract funded work, ranging from primary research and program evaluation to service delivery (technical assistance and direct service). The diverse portfolio is guided by PIRE’s mission and commitment to the application of science for the public good. PIRE is conducting the 2013 National Roadside Survey of Alcohol and Drugged Driving principally funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). We also are conducting the nation’s first Case-Control Drug Crash Risk Study to measure the contribution of various drugs alone and in combination with alcohol to the risk of being involved in a crash. NHTSA has now funded PIRE to study in Colorado and Washington the effects of legalizing the recreational use of marijuana on the prevalence of marijuana-involved driving. Our emphasis on environmental prevention research funded by the National Institute of Alcohol and Alcohol Abuse (NIAAA) center grant, created the Prevention Research Center, now in its 31st year. The outcomes from the center grant have contributed significantly to the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Programs’ (OJJDP) Enforcement of Underage Drinking Laws (EUDL) program strategies over the last 17 years. These now widely accepted environmental strategies have been implemented in most states to address underage drinking. Below is a sampling of PIRE’s 180 domestic and international projects funded by over 40 agencies.
The mission of the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation (PIRE) is to promote, undertake, and evaluate activities, studies, and programs that improve individual and public health, welfare, and safety. In support of this mission, we create and support an environment within which skilled, innovative, and dedicated researchers and practitioners work to extend the leading edges of their respective fields.
