Description

All of our cooking is from scratch. Because we cook traditional Mexican recipes, our re-fried Peruano beans and tamales contain lard as do the pork menu items. Both the red and green rices contain chicken stock. Black beans are completely vegetarian. Tortillas do not contain lard. We fry in oil that is trans-fat free and saute with canola and extra virgin olive oils.

"Palapa is a local favorite! Mary and Leo created a quaint authentic Mexican Food restaurant at State St and the 154- next to the new Hyatt. The patio is a great place to relax and meet your friends during the 3-6PM Happy Hour M-Thursday. Come meet our friendly staff that have been with us for years. We are Palapa, a local and mom and pop type place with great food."

My husband and I have eaten here at least 10 times in the past few months. It has never disappointed. The menu is varied and everything we have tried has been delicious. Service is attentive and personal. Our favorites are remembered. The atmosphere on the outside patio feels just like Mexico. Best chips and salsa I've tried in town. Parking: There are about 5 spots near the entrance and many more in the back. Some are a bit of a walk on uneven ground. Wheelchair accessibility: There is one handicapped parking spot near the entrance.
Great staff, delicious food, and reasonably priced. We had the Chile verde and fish lunch special l. The fish was cooked in an awesome creamy garlic sauce and to flaky perfection. I also really liked that they had different side options other than the usual “red rice & refried pinto beans” - you can also get a cilantro rice, frijoles de la hoya, black beans, and sautéed veggies. Parking can be a bit tricky, but worth it!
Can't go wrong with anything on the menu here. My favorites are the chicken enchiladas and the wet burritos. The tacos are excellent at well. Another option is to try a combo plate. Those are always delicious. Cool spot. Definitely a hidden gem in SB cause of it's weird location. They have plenty of outdoor seating and also a walk up counter. Parking: Plenty of parking, but It's a little difficult to get to the restaurant because of how it intersects the 154 and state street. Very congested area.
Service was initially great and we were seated right away on their outside patio. Chips and salsa were great and a cold Negra Modelo was delivered promptly. The problems started when the food arrived. The portions were on the small side but the tamale was pretty tasty. Unfortunately my chicken enchilada was stone cold so I tracked down a server to heat it. The salty black beans were already hot so when I eventually got my plate back the beans were like hot lava. I ordered a second beer, but despite confirming with 2 servers it never showed. Cool atmosphere on their patio though so we may give it another try.
Mucho delisioso and affordable! I recommend the le simple veggie burrito for breakfast.$11! And complimentary chips and salsa! Juan was a wonderful server, so personable, and misses his family in Reno...we are praying that he gets to go there once the flooding here in the central valley stops. They have wonderful dramatic Mexican music and it's an adorable place! Palapas means palm and the other outdoor seating and they're right next to the Hyatt in what's called upper State Street of very sleepy area that also has the Dutch gardens! A German restaurant that was open for many many years and is classic and authentic with their wiener schnitzel. I'll be reviewing them soon as I've eaten there twice and they have freshly harvested chaperel mushrooms from Gaviota in an incredible soup. 1 just gave me complimentary samples of the beans and rice which look delicioso as well! Five stars for Palapas!!!
Great find, surprisingly empty on a late Saturday morning. My huevos rancheros was kinda small portion but very delicious. Wife Menudo was very good and she was all smiles slurping it up. If I lived close by I'd be a regular. Well worth the visit
We had the surf and turf Parillada. Ton of food and wonderful presentation. Plenty of different flavors. Staff was very wonderful and friendly. The chef came out and explained everything on the dish before we ordered. Very highly recommended.Food: 5/5
I thought it was one of the better Mexican dinners I've had in Santa Barbara. In my opinion it's kind of a standard menu so a little more classic compared to some of the popular Mexican restaurants in SB. I would go back for sure. Parking: Easy parking on the side of restaurant
We've been several times and always enjoy ourselves. The food is good quality, prices aren't bad, and the staff has always been friendly. They'll meet you with chips and salsa before you even have a chance to sit down. I've had fish that tasted fresh, burritos that were legit, and a torta that was absolutely delicious. Friends and family have had enchiladas, soup, tacos, and more. I have yet to hear of a complaint. Good stuff.
The tostada ceviche appetizer is such a huge portion that it's a sharable plate for 2-3. I was expecting it to be marinated in lime to give it a more lemony taste but none the less it is really good and tastes really fresh.
