A beautiful state park with lots and lots of trails. Almost no cellular connectivity in the canyon, which is great. Dump stations are a bit too tight for a big rig, but manageable. Overall, an absolutely amazing experience & I would highly recommend it.
Really pretty park, easy to get around. Great trails and campsites. I didn't stay at any, but all were in great shape, electric, water, dump site available. Also had some cabins that looked fun to stay in for a night with views.
What an incredible place to camp! This is the Texas I wanted to be a part of! This canyon is spectacular! The second largest canyon in North America. Right in the middle of the flatest land i have ever seen drops this immense canyon. This was my second destination to visit on this westward trip and i was not disappointed! The hiking was superb! We struggled with the heat, but got in a very good long hike along the canyon walls hiking half the commache trail and half the rock garden trail. Very hot, lots of flies, but we were rewarded with nice evenings and semi cool nights. 4 nights spent at one of the best state parks I have ever been to! Very large sites with huge covered terrace and spotless restrooms! This was an impeccable campground with caring hosts who want to make your stay a trip to remember. This is the part of Texas i want to remember! Glorious!
We arrived at 7 a.m. to hike on Lighthouse Trail. Come early to get a parking spot! If not, expect to park on the side of the road. The trail is a moderately difficult trail that requires good shoes, plenty of water, and snacks. The trail has ups and downs and does not have sure footing all the way. After 9 am expect a lot more people on the trail along with bicycles. Temperatures in the morning were brisk. Wear a jacket in March. It took us about 4 hours to complete the trail there and back but we were walking at a moderate pace and made numerous stops to enjoy the view. The visitor centers and the gift shops are extremely crowded, but worth the effort. Restrooms are just okay. There are no water fountains or trash cans. When we left at 1 pm there was a 3 mile long line of cars waiting to get in. Overall the sight is breathtaking and we loved the experience, but the park needs better organization. *The day before we stopped at the overlook on Highway 207 south. We highly recommend this experience.
Amazing views during the day and stars at night!! Tons of flies if not going during winter! Camp sites were very clean, restrooms and showers as well, general store/mini restaurant easily accessible for any last min needs.
Incredibly dog friendly, RV friendly, and family friendly. Beginner-advanced options. Absolutely stunning even just driving through…let alone hiking it. Trails were maintained and paths were well marked. It’s a must go to state park Important: Only thing to note- DO NOT leave any windows in car/RV cracked…we came back 3 hours later to HUNDREDS of flies. Our RV had no trash or food and we only bought it 2 days prior so I could only imagine the infestation if the camper was in use.
Palo Duro Canyon, often referred to as the "Grand Canyon of Texas," is a spectacular natural wonder located in the Texas Panhandle, USA. It was formed by millions of years of erosion by the Prairie Dog Town Fork of the Red River. It exposes colorful layers of rock, including red, orange, yellow, and lavender hues, making it visually stunning. It is the second-largest canyon in the United States, stretching over 120 miles long, up to 20 miles wide, and reaching depths of around 800 feet. The canyon covers approximately 29,000 acres of land. Palo Duro Canyon is not only a geological wonder but also a natural playground for outdoor enthusiasts, offering a wide range of recreational activities and stunning scenery for visitors to enjoy. It's a must-visit destination for those exploring the beauty of Texas.
I came here yesterday for the first time and it was amazing! Super cool views and multiple tourist spots to park. There was also a museum and gift shop and plenty of camping options! This is definitely a must see if you come through!!
Don't miss going here!! It's spectacular! I don't recommend going during summer months when it's brutally hot. Loads of hiking trails, wildlife, and biking areas. Wear boots and be snake aware. If you aren't hiking, it's an easy drive. Not much is out that way, so bring plenty of water and pack your lunch! Also, the night views are amazing! Stars as far as you can see!
If you can go and are in the area. Go. It's an amazing hike on a well maintained trail. At the trail head the rangers are fantastic making sure that you don't go in unprepared. 144° on ground by noon. So leave the puppers home for this one. Unless you get out there early. This is not for the faint ha get it? Of heart. There are plenty of resting spots but the bulk 6mile round trip of the trail is not covered with shade... reports of snakes. Heat sickness and exhaustion is real and will get you quicker than anything so bring water at least 3L per person, hat, long sleeved light clothing if you need. Enjoy and Be Safe!
