Park Inn Hotel

Description

The Historic Park Inn Hotel and City National Bank are two adjacent commercial buildings located in downtown Mason City, Iowa which were designed in the Prairie School style by the renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Completed in 1910, the Park Inn Hotel is the last remaining Frank Lloyd Wright designed hotel in the world, of the six for which he was the architect of record. The City National Bank is one of only two remaining Frank Lloyd Wright-designed banks in the world. It was the first Frank Lloyd Wright designed project in the state of Iowa, and today carries both major architectural and historical significance. In 1999, the Park Inn Hotel was named on the Iowa Historic Preservation Alliance's Most Endangered Properties List. The Park Inn Hotel was the third hotel designed by Wright and served as the prototype for Midway Gardens in Chicago and the Imperial Hotel, Tokyo, which was torn down in 1968.In 1907, when law partners James E. Blythe and J. E. E. Markley were looking for an architect to compete in quality with the eight-story bank building that would be built across the corner, they didn’t hesitate to give the commission to Frank Lloyd Wright, a young architect who was building a reputation in the Chicago area. For them Wright would build a complex, multi-purpose building that would give them multiple income streams. Their law offices would be on the second floor of the building's narrower central waist and the hotel's east wing, surrounded on the south by a two-story banking room with rental office space above. On the north would be a 42-room hotel, with basement shops beneath the Bank and Hotel. Wright managed to pack all these functions into an aesthetically well-integrated building that architecturally would be the bridge between Wright's Prairie School period and his Midway Gardens and the Imperial Hotel to follow.

The rooms are small, which is to be expected for a motel designed back in 1910. Not a fan that there is a wine fridge vs mini fridge in room. I absolutely love that there is an overhead light since so many hotels do not and that you have complete control over your comfort. The controls for the light honestly took me a while to figure out. No ice machine, but mini bags of ice you can take. Location is wonderful. I explored part of their statues and fun architecture after checking in, ate at their bar, then went out to see their Veterans memorial and more of their tour of statues. Me and coworker were disappointed in the food and we never got checked on once food was delivered. Drink was amazing. It was fun to stay there vs. The standard Holiday Inn we usually stay at. Also helpful to know - we have a 26ft vehicle and they were able to give us a pass to park nearby to ignore the 2hr parking limit
Definitely take the tour if you have the chance. Barb was our Docent and she was excellent! The history of the property, all of the adversity it underwent over the years and the renovation which brought everything back together was amazing to hear. The rooms were comfortable as were the furnishings. The bathroom was a reasonable size and classic, yet modern. The work out room is tucked away in a corner of the lower level, but it's there. The Draftsman bar is a cool man cave also in the lower level which is worth visiting. All in all, it was a great weekend stay.
The beauty and history of this hotel cannot be over stated. It is like exploring a secret chamber back in time. There are multiple outdoor terraces, great rooms, sitting rooms, original stained glass and tile work throughout. The restoration is so well done, it is seamless from the original. I have to say, Jim who was hosting the front desk last night was a highlight of the trip. He was so knowledgeable about the history of the hotel and the restoration. He pointed out amazing facts that we would have surely overlooked on our own. Hidden skylights, carpets woven in Egypt, shimmering mortar between the bricks in the ballroom! He was patient with all of our questions and just a fantastic host. As the last remaining Frank Lloyd Wright designed hotel in the world, Historic Park Hotel is an absolute must see.
Let me start with the pros; Hotel is very nice, comfortable and quiet. The wood decor is very nice if you like wood everything. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Now the cons; Frank Lloyd Wright must have been a short man because the ceilings are very low. If you are about 6 feet tall or taller, you will have to duck to be able to walk around the lobby. The rest of the ceilings are not much higher. The rooms are very small and it feels a little cramped in there. Internet speed is abhorrently slow to pretty much absent. I hope they fix it soon. Overall, a good stay but I would definitely choose a different place on my next visit.
Such an amazing place to stay. Love the hotel itself and the workers are awesome and very welcoming. Brooke and Isaac were a blast at the bar. The room was great and the pool table was fun to use as well. This was our 2nd stay there and hopefully, wont be our last.Rooms: 5/5
Frank Lloyd Wright designed hotel. It's been renovated but they've kept so many attributes Wright created. Lovely hotel to walk around and to stay in. Be careful though! Some of the ceilings and doorways are low! Wright was short in height and designed his buildings to his perspective.Rooms: 5/5
A rare design in a hotel, it does scream Frank Lloyd Wright from every room, corridor and stairway in the building. A little bit odd in that the ceiling over the check-in desk is almost exactly my height 6'4 and I can say if you're tall watch your head. I ate dinner in the bar downstairs as the restaurant was fully booked, but the bartender took great care of me and it was a fabulous meal. Food & drinks: See above, the restaurant and bar was a definite step up from most in facility Services.
Wonderful stay! A friend and I stayed on our travels and everything was top notch. From customer service to the room 100%wonderful. Keep in mind the hotel is historic so the rooms are on the smaller side. Absolutely beautiful and clean though. I wouldn't hesitate to stay again.Rooms: 5/5
Very cool place to stay. They had a tour which was only $12. Nice restaurant and a bar with a pool table downstairs!Rooms: 5/5
Absolute gem! We will never stay anywhere else in Mason City - a historic treasure and a luxurious experience for a very reasonable rate. Heated floors in the bathroom. Amazing. I wish we could have stayed another night. Fantastic location facing the park. Lots of food options nearby. 10/10 recommend!
