Party Cake Shop

About

Party Cake Shop is a full-service, family owned bakery specializng in cakes, donuts and our famous burnt almond torte.

Description

Anton Grunner built the building in 1910 and operated it as a bakery until 1930 when he sold it to Anton Herold who operated the bakery until his son's death in 1957. The bakery was then leased to the following: Fink's Bakery, Wholfarth's Bakery, Albert's Bakery until Jack Dolan purchased it in 1961 and started Party Cake Shop.

Jack became interested in baking in 1951 when he worked as a clean up boy at Kribel's Bakery. He worked there during high school as well as doing some home baking and selling of baked foods door to door. Baking became his passion. He graduated high school in 1956 and received a scholarship to the American institute of Baking in Chicago. After graduating he was offered employment in other cities but his dream was to own a bakery in Pittsburgh. In 1961 he purchased the bakery from Albert's Bakery and began his ownership of the bakery. In 1965 the building was purchased from Anton Herold and additions were added to bring the bakery kitchen up from the basement to street level. With the help of family and especially his brother George Dolan, the business began to grow. Jack operated the Bakery until 2002 when he turned it over to his brother George. Jack retired from baking in 2007.

On April 17, 2007, a second Party Cake Shop bakery opened in Mt. Lebanon, PA on Beverly Road. After seven years of owning Party Cake Shop, George sold the business to his cousin, Scott Smith and his wife Nancy Smith in late June of 2009. George continues to work at Party Cake Shop several days a week utilizing his special decorating skills. Scott originally was employed by Party Cake back in the late 70's. He left Party Cake in 1981 and worked for 24 years as the production manager of the Breadworks on the Northside. He returned to Party Cake in 2005 and has been the chief baker at Party Cake since then. Scott received his baking training under Jack Dolan in the late 70's along with 24 years of baking experience from the Breadworks. Scott trained at the Dunwoody Institute in Minnesota and received a diploma in Baking Technology from The EFBA Baking Academy in d'Aurillac, France. Scott and George are continuing the long tradition of creating delicious cakes, breads, cookies, donuts and pastries that you've come to expect. Both bakeries specialize in wedding cakes, decorated cakes for all occasions, specialty cakes like our famous Burnt Almond torte, fresh pastries and holiday items. We have been a Brookline institution for over 51 years and hope to be a presence in Mt. Lebanon for a long time to come

Believe the bad reviews. My entire family and many of our friends exclusively ordered Party Cake for countless years until the last couple because of how bad the quality has become. The new owners have destroyed its reputation. Last year we ordered a cake for my birthday because I was so loyal to the bakery and it was not good. This year, despite the experience prior, a few bad baked goods in between, and aforementioned family and friends calling us crazy... we got a cake for my birthday again with me holding out hope it'd be what it once was. Sadly, it was not edible. The icing tasted sour, the breading tasted stale, and the cake as a whole was just disgusting. My entire family scraped it back into the box and we didn't have a cake. We called for a refund and the manager did apologize and oblige. After a week or so we noticed no refund. We called again and the same manager seemed clueless and again asked for details, amount, date, etc. but he said he'd take care of it. This time he told us he can't issue one and that the owners need to handle... but they've been on vacation. He said he left them a note and promised they would finally handle it. We're over a month out and still no refund... so called this morning. Again, he put blame on the owners but said to come in before 11 today and he would just give us $25 cash. That's good, but we work today and it's a 45 min drive for us, so that doesn't work. Why he couldn't leave it in an envelope, offer a different day, now all of a sudden cant refund card, etc. is beyond me... but thankfully my wife took the call. He finally gave us the owners number so TBD what that yields, if anything. Needless to say our loyalty and patronage to Party Cake is done. You're better off even just going to Giant Eagle for baked goods or decent pastries, etc.
No paczkis today. Sold out until Tuesday, today is Saturday. Picked up an assortment cream cheese danish, apple fritter, and some other donuts. Let's not forget the loaf of Italian bread, I like mine unsliced. Stood in line for about 50 minutes, but what do you expect at 8am on Saturday morning here. Donuts were solid, cream cheese danish very good. Looking forward to making a Dagwood with the Italian loaf.
Beautiful cake and tastes amazing— and to the negative review below my own, the reason many local businesses fail is because of unrealistic expectations. People complain small businesses are disappearing but it’s honestly because of folks not giving businesses the time to refine themselves. If small businesses receive our support, they will grow and improve. But bashing them and throwing a temper tantrum on google reviews rather than getting in contact with the business is subversive. The bakery is a Brookline staple. It won’t be the same as it was with the previous owners, but it’s the closest we are going to get.
Visiting the Party Cake Shop is like reading the sweetest romance, such as If The Shoe Fits by Julie Murphy. From the storefront to the interior with glistening display cases filled with sweets and savory options, the focus is clearly on the deliciousness. I walked in, searching for a half dozen of doughnuts to rival all doughnuts, and I walked out with that half dozen plus a pepperoni roll and an individual burnt almond torte. For me, doughnut shops and bakeries alike are judged by their Boston Creme doughnut. I look for one-of-a-kind doughnuts so they're not perfect that are plump with custard with a great chocolate frosting. Party Cake Shop did not disappoint; in fact, I'd say that have reorganized my hierarchy of doughnut deliciousness, claiming the #2 spot! Pricing is reasonable and quite good for this level of drooling goodness. My boyfriend prefers apple fritters, and he was impressed with the flavor and sweetness in ratio with size, saying usually it's one of the other — but Party Cake Shop managed both taste and size! Just like any other doughnut consumer, I truly believe that I'm the connoisseur when it comes to Pittsburgh doughnuts so if you haven't stopped by the Party Cake Shop, you're truly missing out. Pro Tip: create a list of doughnuts you want before you arrive at 6:20 am with groggy eyes it's a lot to make 6 decisions that early P.S. The Burnt Almond Torte offered a frothy sweet confection with delectably crunchy almonds, and I didn't want to finish my half of the cake so I ate it as slow as possible. I'll be back for more.
We used Party Cake Shop for our wedding cake on 5/14/22. I discussed design and details with their designer, Hayli. She really brought my vision to life so beautifully! The cake tasted great, too -- We got many compliments from our guests. We went with white cake, raspberry filling yum!, and buttercream icing. Pricing was SO reasonable. Communication with the bakery was a little tricky for me at first. It is tough to get ahold of them by phone. Once I realized email was the best method of communication, I had no complaints in this department. One last thing for other brides just to be aware of --- they do NOT deliver. So, make sure to plan ahead!
I am so sorry to hear others are having the same issues with my favorite bakery. We’ve been getting cakes there for 40+ years even though we moved from the Brookline area. Always traveled to Party Cake for our cakes. I was volunteered to bring a cake for a surprise birthday party. When we got there to pick up a birthday cake for the special birthday they could not find the order and told us to come back in 45 minutes. Came back 45 minutes later and still had to wait. This is the cake I ended up with. I ordered fudge frosting and ended up with buttercream. The decorations and writing look like they were done by a small child. It was a mess and I was embarrassed to take this cake to our party. I told the young lady behind the counter if this had been my first time at that bakery I would never be back. What has happened?
I could go here every day. This place is easily my favorite local bakery, and I'm grateful to have them just a short walk up the street from me. Everything I've tried here over the past few years have been phenomenal. Their French crullers and pepperoni rolls are my absolute favorites there.
I’m newer to the area.need a last minute cake for my boss. I tried giant eagle, Walmart, Costco, Sam club, shop n save and a few other local bakery I knew of without any luck. I had three different random ppl recommend this bakery with high reviews. I never would’ve known about this place if it wasn’t for word of mouth. I called and was beyond grateful when they said they could do a simple run of the mill 1/2 sheet cake for a reasonable price. When I picked the cake up the next day, not only was the name incorrect, the boarder on the cake was the wrong color, the streamers on the balloons were the wrong color, got whipped cream icing instead of buttercream and yellow cake instead of marble. There was no kitchen staff or manager to rectify the problem. The following two days the store was closed The third day passed not one of the three managers could call to rectify the problem The fourth fmday I had to call an takes to manager Doug told him I’d be there in an hour or so for a refund. By the time I got there he was gone I’m on day five an still can’t get a manager/owner to call N fix their error. For a small business who greatly depends on returning customers and word of mouth to keep their livelihood going…this is exactly how your small business gets tarnished an closes Definitely buy anything here at ur own risk
The counter person promoted the almond torte. Which was very good indeed. But I was saddened and shocked to not be able to get one of thier famous cheese cakes. It's fluffy light...delicious. No other cheese cake compares. I hope when I return to Brookline they are still there...there weren't many baked goods available...but what was there was delicious...fresh...and so flavorful.
Great fresh breads, awesome donuts and yummy treats. Staff is nice and has a “family bakery” feel that’s disappearing around the city. Close Monday & Tuesdays as of late April 2023.
