Turned out to be my best sunset in nature during the trip. I was very pleased to get to camp here and scope out the falls before returning the next day for the sunset. It turned out to be the perfect evening with the overcast. I had a nice and tranquil time in the swimming area as well. The river water was nice and warm even in early summer.
We had a blast checking out this state park. The flowers were in full bloom and the water was chilly but not freezing. If you’re packing a lot of stuff be prepared to carry it a good ways as there’s a pretty good distance walk from the parking lot to the steps then to the river. There’s a good bit of steps to take but it was worth the walk. We had a great time at the park all day.
We’ve been here several times and always enjoy it. There are many trails and camping. The falls are interesting to explore and there’s a swimming area a bit down the river. It’s a beautiful park with a ton of variety. Definitely get your park pass in advance, especially in the summer, as entry is limited and can fill quickly. The drive to the park is also pretty.
I had a great time hiking the trail and across the rocks to see all of the waterfalls. The rangers working at the park were all very friendly and helpful in giving advice on an annual park pass and on how best to see all of the falls. It was raining lightly when I went, so there were some pretty slick spots to navigate, but it was a great experience. The falls were all running heavily because of the recent rains, and it was gorgeous. Price for entry: $6.00
Lovely experience! Spent an little over an hour wandering around the falls then did 2hrs from the swimming area to trammel crossing to the overlooks and back. Overall 6.5 miles during 4 hrs and only saw part of the park. Plan to come back and do wolf mountain! Loved this park as much as enchanted rock.Visited onPublic holidayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYesPrice for adult entry$6–10
Visiting Pedernales falls state park for the first time for stories in the stars stargazing night. It’s a fantastic place for stargazing around Austin. Rangers was pretty impressive with story telling where they have brought telescope to look for stars and galaxy in sky. At star theater, there were rocks you can just sit or lay down to see beautiful dark night sky with full of stars and moon moving between the clouds with clear view. At first, I feel disappointed at first with cloudy sky and later it was cleared off. Had a amazing experience definitely worth a visit.
Great hiking trails, camping, and park. But not for the faint of heart! Bring lots of water for hiking. Some trails don’t have much shade. Research in advance if you’re planning on hiking.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYesPrice for adult entry$6–10
Spent 3 nights at the park in April 2023 and loved it so much we plan to go back. What we really liked: The sites are very spacious with privacy, especially between sites, very clean, very quiet, very relaxing. We enjoyed riding bicycles around the park and felt very safe. The bathrooms were very clean and the hosts and volunteers were very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about the park. The river was beautiful and the water was just the right temperature. We really enjoyed swimming at the river and were amazed at the many beautiful wild flowers around the trail to get to the river. Great pictures to take of the red, light and dark pink, white, yellow, purple, orange wildflowers all together. What we would like to see improved: We are not experienced trail hikers but that does not mean we should not try, experience and enjoy the trails. We would like better and more signage for the Twin Falls trail for example. The round trail markers on the trees did not help us from getting lost twice since many other trails seems to look the same and easy to follow and get in trouble ending up in the wrong place. We did not feel comfortable on the Twin Falls trail after getting lost twice and wished it had been a more clearly marked trail for beginners like us. Hopefully these trails can be enjoyable, and safe for all levels of hikers. We highly recommend the park and plan to go back. We brought enough food and water which kept us from driving to Johnson City, a 10 mile drive each way to get supplies.
Great place to visit if you like outdoor activities such as walking on the trails. You will need proper shoes, long sleeves and plenty of water to take with. Take a map at the entrance and choose the trail. The park is properly maintained.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$11–15
Love this park. This is my third time hiking here, I think. It definitely was hot & I wouldn't recommend doing a 10 mile hike much later into the summer. Thankfully, we were on a path that had lots of escape routes back to the cars for those who couldn't make the entire route. FYI, if you plan to take off from the Madrone trailhead, you have to drive all the way into the park to get your pass from the headquarters. Then drive all the way back out, hang a left & drive a bit down Hwy 201 to the trailhead parking lot. If you are trying to go to see Jones Spring from there & you walk past the Pedernales sign & you are going the wrong way. Lol! The Jones Spring sounded like a cool spot to visit, but it didn't live up to our hopes. There was only a trickle of a water. That being said, we saw BRIGHT RED dragonflies there! They aren't even supposed to live in the US! They were so cool & beautiful! Also, if you want to go further up on the Pedernales Falls area, just Wade through the shallow water by the rocks on the side closest to the stairs. There is a way down through all the rocks, but it's not nearly as easy or as fast. The trails aren't really marked by dots, footprints, etc. while you're on the trail, but if you read the signs, you won't get lost. The trails are well maintained & the bathrooms are very clean.
