Pelham Parkway-Van Nest Library

About

This one-story library houses adult, teen, and children's collections, as well as extensive World Languages collections. Programs and classes for all ages!

Description

The Pelham Parkway-Van Nest branch of The New York Public Library is a modern building with a distinctive facade. It is located around the corner from the busy shopping district on Lydig Avenue. This one-story facility houses adult, teen, and children's collections, as well as extensive World Languages collections, featuring books in Albanian, Arabic, Bengali, Russian, Spanish, Urdu, and many other languages. Programs and classes for people of all ages are offered daily in the glass-enclosed community room.

The history of the branch goes back to 1912, when it was first established as a station of NYPL's Travelling Libraries program, bringing library books to neighborhoods that didn't yet have branches. The Van Nest sub-branch opened in 1917, and occupied a series of small, but progressively larger storefront locations around the neighborhood, until it moved to its current location in 1968. Since then, it has been known variously as the Van Nest-Pelham, the Van Nest, and, since 2014, as the Pelham Parkway-Van Nest Library.

Flew in for the week yesterday and discovered a favorite author of mine was giving a talk the same day. The author was unsurprisingly friendly and put on a great talk, and the staff at the library was just as friendly. Their event ran well and they even offered snacks and drinks for free. If I lived here, I'd definitely come back! Locals take advantage.
Haven't really had issues, but if you have a sensitive nose the bathroom is a bit pungent. Been going there practically 2-3 days every week and most of the time quite quiet, only issue is the kids/teen section is directly next to most of the book areas, as well as the desks and computers. If the teens are being obnoxiously loud, then that's an issue. Staff seem pretty solid but won't really mess around the teen section even if they are being loud. Great place just to plop in and look around on your phone or possibly grab a book off the shelf, like others have said it is quite small and there's only about 6 soft seats within the library, so would recommend but have seen and been in better libraries.
Is a little small and the bathroom is tiny and unclean. I have a 2 year old and is almost impossible changing a diaper there despite having a decent kid section. Staff is nice and helpful. I like the place just a few changes will make a huge difference.
Very unorganized and some of the staff seem to hate their jobs. Last week Friday, I saw online that they were having a open play toddler event from 10am. When my child and I arrived promptly around 9:45am, the library was closed so we waited. Only to find out from one of the staff that the event was starting around 10:30am. When 10:30am came around and no one cane to th play area, I asked another staff member at the front desk who informed me that on her calendar on her computer, it showed the event start time as 11:30am. At that point, I left but realized hours later around 4:30pm, that my child who is 22 months old forgot her small book bag hanging on one of the hooks in play center. When I greeted the staff member at the front, she gave me a look like she didn’t want to be bothered, and then when I asked about the missing book bag, she looked annoyed and said that nothing is in the lost and found. Then I just decided to look myself and by this time another staff member decided to ask me questions about the bag i.e.what color it was, what time I left it etc but of course to no avail. The bag was gone. Honestly, I felt disgusted because the bag was a sentimental gift. It is so unfortunate that my child got her book stolen from the library. Just a reminder that no where is safe and there are evil people lurking everywhere.
I'm not sure if I just overlooked it but I don't think this library has a drop box. Because it is only open until 5pm this makes it very difficult to not incur late fees for those who work regular hours. Also, it would be nice if the staff would create interesting suggested reading book displays particularly for summer reading. It would also be nice if they had more books in general. There are shelves that are completely bare. In general, I get the feeling that this library needs more funding.
Grew up going to this location. Obviously we all go to the library to get some reading or work done. It's kind of annoying when the kids keep making noise, people on the phone thinking they are in their own place/starbucks... but when a worker librarian? with an annoying laugh is the reason you are unable to focus... NYPL? Seriously...
The toddler program is deteriorating every day. All the parents are complaining. It used to be very good but the new librarian is not well prepared. She doesn’t sing and dance with the kids. She doesn’t put out the toys for kids to play together. For art class she only gives out a paper for kids to color. Now she has started “ family time” where the parents or the caregiver read a book to their own kids. It’s all we do at home. Some kids or parents don’t even speak english. They come there for kids to learn english. At all other branches they have Story time where the librarian reads 3 books, they sing and dance and then they play together. This librarian doesn’t listen to the parents’ suggestions based on previous classes. She told us that she decides what to do in class and if we don’t like it we should go to other branches. The manager doesn’t even know what is going on. The parents are very disapointed and frustated.. This librarian should follow what is described in NYCPL description of the classes. A few months ago a representative from NYCPL central came and show her how to do the class. She refuse to do it. I guess she is Civil Service and she doesn’t care. Obviously she doesn’t want to be a children’’s librarian .She doesn’t think she has some responsibility for these children. What a difference between the previous children’ librarian Ms. Lopez. She was excellent.
Neat and clean facility. I had not been there before today, but I will come back for some of the activities I saw announced.
Van Nest Library is a gem. They have reading and play time for toddlers. Computer/homework computer access free WiFi. Plus you can have all of your library holds deliverdd here. Keep this spot open. We need more libraries not less.
More like an annoying day care center. It’s like these parents don’t wanna take care of their kids! And that lady at the front so miserable
