The new environmentally friendly Pell Library opened in April 2009 on South Ferry Road in Narragansett, Rhode Island. It is approximately 13,000 sq. feet and fully LEED Silver certified.
The Pell Library's 68,000 volume research collection emphasizes all oceanographic disciplines, including: biological, chemical, geological, and physical oceanography, marine biology, fisheries, marine and atmospheric chemistry, marine geology, coastal habitats, geosciences, and GSO's most recent specialty, archaeological oceanography. The collection includes monographs, scientific journals, theses, CD ROM's, videos, DVDs, and a Special Collections room.
The Pell Marine Science Library, which is ranked one of the top Marine Science Libraries in the country, is located at the University of Rhode Island's Narragansett Bay Campus and serves the research and instructional needs of the faculty, marine research scientists and graduate students at the URI Graduate School of Oceanography, as well as the faculty, staff and students of the URI Kingston and Providence Campuses. Pell also serves the needs of the scientist and staff at the neighboring EPA Laboratory, the Northeast National Marine Fisheries Service Laboratory, as well as the general public.
