I really enjoyed this museum. Though it was smaller than I expected, especially paying $18/ticket, I expected a bigger museum. But it did have an amazing ancient Egyptian collection more so than anything else, and that's mainly what I came for, so I was happy. They also had an ancient Chinese exhibit and a small Mayan and Native American and African collection. Also their gift shop leaves something to be desired. My main issues were the price, even NYC doesn't charge that much and only ask for a donation of your choice. Plus their garage was expensive as well, can't remember how much because boyfriend paid, but it was close to about the same as the price of one ticket. I also didn't like that it said we had to buy timed tickets online, and we almost didn't go at the time we wanted to because we thought we missed our window and would have to wait, but when we got there, we thought we'd just go in person and see, and lo and behold, there were almost no other people there and we were able to go in as soon as we came. This was a Friday afternoon so I can't speak for weekends. Also, a large portion of the Egyptian exhibit doesn't have air conditioning, just large fans, so it was pretty suffocating. Not sure what that's about. Bathrooms on the second floor were only two rooms for males and females and were disgusting and smelled horrible. Other than that, I do recommend the museum overall. Saw lots of amazing artifacts. Plus there is a climate controlled room you can enter where you can see where they work on their artifacts.
An incredible collection of historical artifacts from around the world. The sphinx in the entrance alone is nearly worth the cost of entry to see such an amazing piece of history. Well curated collections broken down into geographic and historical date which makes it easy to follow history as it occurred. The special collection was The History We Wear and was an awesome look at several styles of clothing from periods and places around the world. Staff is friendly and short briefs on specific pieces occur throughout the day to give a rich history of these artifacts. Being able to see an original peice of the Gilgamesh epic in real life was amazing. Highly recommend this museum if you are fascinated by human history.
A hidden gem! A must stop when in Philly! One of the best university archeology museum in the world! The 1st floor has been completely renovated with lots of hands on and interactive exhibits. The renovation on the second floor is not complete yet, but should be soon. Has the largest Sphinx in the Western Hemisphere. 5th largest outside Egypt. Great place for family with kids. Teenagers will find this place interesting too!
Visiting the museum, was like a dream comes true! I really really enjoyed the visit and I loved the staff of the Museum! They are so kind and extremely generous. Thank you so much for the most joyful moments I've ever had in my life! And actually, the day I visited the museum was my birthday day March 29, so I celebrated my birthday by visiting the museum.
Amazing museum with awesome collections. Great collection of Benin bronzes not overlooking their history with the brass from manillas bracelets used for the slave trade melted down for the creation of many of the bronzes.
If you are interested, the Penn Museum is absolutely fantastic - from the architecture of the museum itselfl, to the detailed and well-displayed artifacts. Plus, the dining, educational opportunities, and the assistance is wonderful. What a fantastic museum experience.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$16–20
Very cool place to visit if you are in Philly. In our case we had time in between doctors visits so we took the self guided tour. Very cool Egyptian exhibit with lots of mummys. They have a little piece of everything from all corners of the world. It is also free to go and they have a nice little Cafe and a gift shop.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
We had a few hours to kill on a Sunday afternoon between engagements, so we decided to visit this museum as it was on our bucket list. At the ticket window we were advised by Cynthia of a tour that was just about to start. As a result, we were able to enjoy a 7,000 year tour of Mesopotamia in less than one hour. Our docent was Yaroub, who was born and raised in Mesopotamia and is passionate about the history of his home. He made us feel like we were there, way back in the day. Clearly Yaroub is a well-educated individual. And then there is the architecture of this buildings, featuring the impressive dome. Thank you, Cynthia, and Yaroub for a very entertaining and educational visit.
This museum was absolutely amazing. It was not crowded and you are allowed to get extremely close to the artifacts. I was shocked and filled with glee at the opportunity to see the craftsmanship of ancient people up close in such detail. If you’re an ancient Egypt fan then this is the place for you to visit!
We had a great time. I'd never been to this museum and I really enjoyed it. I especially loved the Egyptian and Asian exhibits. I really liked that the explanation of each item was so comprehensive and I learned a lot. I want to take my son back to see everything.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
