Penn State University Creamery

Description

The Pennsylvania State University Creamery, often shortened to just Berkey Creamery or The Creamery, is a producer and vendor of ice cream, sherbet, and cheese, all made through the Department of Food Science in the College of Agricultural Sciences of the Pennsylvania State University. It is the largest university creamery in the United States, using approximately 4.5 million pounds of milk annually, approximately half of which comes from a 225-cow herd at the University's Dairy Production Research Center and the rest from an independent milk producer, and selling 750,000 hand-dipped ice cream cones per year. Offering over 100 ice cream flavors made with a butterfat content of 14.1% and ingredients from around the country and the world, the Creamery's ice cream is enjoyed by many students and alumni every day.HistoryThe first Creamery was built in 1865, and dairy short courses were first offered in 1892. Ice cream became a part of football weekend tradition in 1896, when Creamery ice cream was first sold to the public. By 1932, the Creamery was buying milk and cream from hundreds of nearby farmers and was selling ice cream in both State College and Altoona, Pennsylvania.Ice cream makers Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield of Ben & Jerry's, are 1978 alumni of the Penn State Creamery correspondence course in ice cream-making, Agriculture 5150, which teaches manufacturers the basics of ice cream production.

The ice cream here taste amazing and they have tons of different flavors to choose from! I like how they only have once size, it makes the ordering process fast and keeps the line moving. Definitely worth a stop if you are at Penn state!
If you're a Penn State alum or simply passing through State College, you can't miss out on the experience of stopping by the Berkey Creamery for a scoop or two of their delicious ice cream. As you step into the Creamery, you're surrounded by a rich history of dairy research and production. With over 150 years of expertise, the Creamery has become a world leader in dairy manufacturing and food science, thanks to the science-based process developed by Penn State's food and dairy scientists. But the real star of the show is the ice cream. Creamy, smooth, and rich, each scoop is crafted with the utmost care and attention to detail. From classic flavors like vanilla and chocolate to unique blends like Peachy Paterno and Bittersweet Mint, there's something for everyone. But the Creamery is more than just a delicious stop on your graduation day. It's an important part of the Penn State community, providing quality dairy products to students in on-campus housing and supporting the teaching, research, and outreach programs of the Department of Food Science. A visit to the Berkey Creamery is a must during any visit to the Happy Valley area. Indulge in a sweet treat and savor the rich history and expertise that make the Creamery a Penn State tradition.
The ice cream was good. There was a long line but it moved fairly quickly. There were designated stations for each flavor and as our first time there it was a little confusing. It was busy and a bit chaotic. Each table outside had sanitary wipes and an umbrella which was nice. It was raining when we went but we managed to stay dry. There weren't many flavor options for the shakes. I got coffee flavored ice cream but would have gotten the shake if they had it. Delicious and creamy! It's located on a beautiful campus. 4 stars.
One of the best ice-creams I had in my life, so so tasty and the quality is phenomenal. I bet everyone will like the creamery ice-cream
Rich creamy ice cream without all the air. True hard packed, the old fashioned way! Delicious, and absolutely worth a 3 hour drive!
The ice cream is delicious and super rich and creamy with a wide array of flavors. The store carries everything from milk, cheese, cream, ice cream pints and half gallons to beef sticks, grilled stickies sticky buns, chips and even t-shirts and baseball caps. Some of the staff are friendly while others could care less about being there. The ice cream is the star though and is really excellent.
Ice cream was delicious, and I loved that there were wipes at the tables! They had a nice selection of coffee, donuts, snacks, memorabilia, and ice cream to go as well!
This place is simply AMAZING. Try the minis. They're a perfect way to sample a few! And, they ship!
Great experience. $6 for cone or cup, same size and no options. Some of the unique flavors. Provided sanitization wipes.
Can't visit PennState without a stop at the Creamery!! Best ice cream ever! Sprinkles for free! Still have Peachy Paterno in honor of the man. Miss you Joe.
