Pensacola Memorial Gardens was founded in 1954 by Harry and Mildred Sutton. Their basic philosophy was to build a memorial park cemetery of beauty - one that provides a place of serenity and depicts LIFE, HOPE, LOVING CARE, and a NEW BEGINNING; also, a cemetery that would have perpetual care (continued and indefinite upkeep) throughout the centuries, even after all spaces are filled.
Today only 25 of the 61 acre memorial park have been developed, leaving plenty of space for continued growth. Current projects include the development of 6 acres, facilitating 5000 burial lots, to include a columbarium for above ground inurnments, and a vision to further develop an additional mausoleum for above ground burial, upright monuments, and an attractive center, focal piece featuring a water fountain to add to the serenity of the gardens. Our additional acreage is surrounded by 167 Arizona Cypress trees creating an esthetic natural border & is an extension of our historical gardens, offering more space to accommodate Pensacolian heritage. Statues of Christ, the Last Supper, and the Apostles sculpted in Italy from pure Carrara marble by renowned artists are a few of the features that enhance the beauty of the gardens. Our gardens also include a recently developed Veterans Garden with a monument honoring all who’ve served. Our gardens are fully irrigated and maintained with regard to perpetual care.
Louise (“Weejee”) Sutton Miller became the President of Pensacola Memorial Gardens in 1987 after her father's death and her mother's retirement. She oversaw the construction of the Funeral Home in 1995. Weejee’s dream was to provide families with the convenience of a funeral home on cemetery property where families could walk or drive a very short distance to the gravesite after services to eliminate the need for commute to an across town cemetery. Weejee passed away on March 4, 2012 after a short illness at which time her children David, Karina, and Dianne proudly acquired ownership. All three of Weejees children are as committed to this community as their mother and are determined to build on her legacy. PMG is still the only family owned and operated cemetery and funeral home combination in the area which brings great pride to the many long term employees and staff.
