People's Park (Berkeley)

Description

People's Park in Berkeley, California, US, is a park located off Telegraph Avenue, bounded by Haste and Bowditch streets and Dwight Way, near the University of California, Berkeley. The park was created during the radical political activism of the late 1960s.Today, People's Park is a free public park. Although open to all, it is mainly a daytime sanctuary for Berkeley's large homeless population who, along with others, receive meals from East Bay Food Not Bombs. Public toilets are available, and the park offers demonstration gardens, including organic community gardening beds and areas landscaped with California native plants, all of which were created by volunteer gardeners. The general community, including University of California students, use the basketball courts. A wider audience is attracted by occasional rallies, concerts, and hip-hop events conducted at the People's Stage, a wooden bandstand designed and built on the western end of the park by volunteers organized by the People's Park Council. Nearby residents, and those who try to use the park for recreation, sometimes experience conflict with the homeless people. The local Southside neighborhood was the scene of a major confrontation between student protesters and police in May 1969. A mural near the park, painted by Berkeley artist O'Brien Thiele and lawyer/artist Osha Neumann, depicts the shooting of James Rector, a student who died from shotgun wounds inflicted by the police on May 15, 1969.

Park is being torn down. Has a colorful history and a lot of protest events were handled here..even the wars. Even though the homeless took 60% of this park over...their community still protected one another. Some homeless to this day still hold grounds here to defend this park against developers. If the developers win....this park will be missed. Before and after pictures will be added. Restrooms: Dirty since the homeless use the bathrooms as showers and the City didn't want to maintain it no longer Dog-friendliness: Very dog friendly people that's a little dogs running around. Picnic area: Pretty sizable park benches to have picnics on
I rate this place a 3. 5 stars for the people trying the best they can to live here. 1 star for the government of Berkeley in terms of supporting them. The city government should do better by these people!
Wish the university would just leave the park alone at this point! Look up the history of this park please! The university took poor peoples houses through eminent domain then never used it. The people took it back and built the park. Then the university fenced it off. Protests ensued. People died at the hands of the government. Look it up folks! Stop the development!
Great space to sing, dance, perform on the stage! Community events bi-monthly include weekly People’s Park Community Committee Meetings @ 1pm in the grove every Sunday. Concerts with local artists, including a recent Christmas Concert 12/2019 with bands, open mic for performers and free speech, toy giveaway to all housed and unhoused children and youth. T-shirts, Posters and buttons for a donation to fund services and user development for people in the park and surrounding area. Historical Site of the birth of the Free Speech Movement of the 1960’s and beyond. Come see the gardens and share the basketball court! Bathrooms cleaned and grounds maintained by park users and community members. Great green space for UC students and Visitors alike. Bring some friends and check it out!
My husband and I decided to return to this park after 20 years and it's just the same as I remember. Somehow they've been able the keep this park primarily clean and have added a lot a vegetable gardens that seemed to be growing on the open.
People's Park is a good place to go to if you want to experience fallout 4 in real life, it has all the chems, raiders, and even super mutants! Berkeley's brotherhood of steel forcibly ejected me from their group due to smoking crack, so I have decided to join the the raiders and live in people's park. The evil institute wants to knock our tents down and build useless things like public services and student housing. Like how are those things more important and prosperous than our great tent village.
I sometimes go to downtown Berkeley and I hate this park, this place is so scary and I always have to walk extra to avoid it. The city was supposed to bulldoze it but there is now a fence and fortress. It’s so annoying
I have so many memories in People Park when I was a freight train riding crust punk back in the early 2000’s. It breaks my heart to know UC Berkeley is stealing it from the people and is being hostile to the community.
So the 2 months I visited the park I’ve come to the realization that the actual park is Great!!
We Bồ Đề Tâm group went there to do a homeless event. There are a lot of homeless here. People are nice here. We often see other groups of volunteers coming out to also give things, cleanup the space,...help out however they can. We all know this isn't solving all the deepest roots causing homeless problems, but we do what we can at the moment... The homeless people are also nice. Often people only take what they need. Many of them have some sort of mental illness and of course there are so many other reasons why they ended up there...I saw people singing, playing music, playing chest...They appreciate when we give them stuffs. Some even come and chat, give jokes, or share about their stories/ mistakes ... When we do our event, we usually brought hot lunches rice with meat and vegetarian spaghetti, hard boiled eggs, cookies. We brought 60 bags of dry food cracker, cup of noodle, water, banana, tangerines, ... And 60 bags of hygiene items toilet paper, toothpaste, tooth brush, hand sanitizers, masks, socks,... We brought some gently used clothes jackets, pants, shirts. We usually do a few homeless events per year, and depending on the season we try to bring helpful items. Like we bring small individual apple pies for Thanksgiving. In the winter, we try to get socks, hats, blankets , sleeping bags, and tarps or even cough drops... Tarps and Sleeping bags are popular. Especially sleeping bags since they are a bit pricey. We aren't always able to get enough for everyone. It's sad to see people fighting over it sometimes...
