Phelps Grove Park

About

Phelps Grove is one of ten historic parks in the Springfield-Greene County Park Board system.

Description

Named for John Smith Phelps, Missouri Congressman, 23rd Governor of Missouri and Springfield founding father, Phelps Grove includes 31 acres of the original 1,000-acre Phelps family homestead.
Creation of Phelps Grove was one of the first projects undertaken by the Springfield (now Springfield-Greene County) Park Board after its formation in 1913.
Known for its mature trees, walking loop and playground, Phelps Grove is beloved by kids, students, neighbors and Springfield residents of all ages. The park also includes tennis courts, a rose garden, Victim's Memorial Garden, stone barbecue pits and large stone pavilion, built in 1916 and designed by Archibald Torbitt, by the same architect which designed the Greene County Courthouse. Fassnight Creek borders Phelps Grove on the south, with the stream channel and picturesque stone bridges built by the WPA.
Historic Markers honoring John Phelps and his wife, Mary Whitney Phelps, are located near the corner of Brookside Drive and Virginia Ave.
To rent the pavilion, call the Park Board office at 417-864-1049

"Phelps Grove Park was one of the first new parks acquired by the Park Board, on April 22, 1914. At the time, the park was south of Springfield city limits. The fieldstone pavilion, bridges and entry gates on Dollison Avenue date to the park’s creation. In the 1930s, McGee-McGregor Wading Pool was constructed and the WPA lined Fassnight Creek with stone. The original park featured zoo animals, relocated to Dickerson Park Zoo in 1923, and a man-made lake, now the site of the Springfield Art Museum. One of Springfield’s founding families, Gov. John S. & Mary Whitney Phelps, homesteaded the park and surrounding neighborhood. Today the 30-acre park is home to mature trees, a paved walking track, a playground, McGee-McGregor Wading Pool, and more"

This is a beautiful park. The large, mature trees make it beautiful. The variety of trees is numerous. We've been there twice, recently. It's quiet. It's suitable for jogging. It's clean and well maintained. And the park play equipment is fine!
This is one of the most beautiful spots in Springfield. Lots of mature trees and foliage. I've been here for several picnics, and it's always a wonderful time. There's often a lot of people around, but it's still a quiet and peaceful place.
It's a great park to picnic, walk your dogs, and bring your children. Lot's of open spaces of shaded grass and nice benches.
We came here to wait for our air bnb to become ready. We had a picnic and took our 2 small dogs around. The park was very clean, had a great layout and great for dogs.
My daughter and I went to a company picnic there the company picnic was awesome and we both had a good time. There are several playgrounds to play at and for the most part the stuff is pretty new only problem with the place is that the plastic got really hot, so be careful of that.
Very nice original park... It's what parks are supposed to be... Not soccer fields & ball diamonds.. trees, grass, a few park benches and old stone building & a place for a family outing.
Tennis courts, track, horse shoe pits, play ground it's a perfect park.
This is a great neighborhood park. It may even be the jewel of small parks in Springfield.. Walk your dog, run, picnic, tennis, horseshoes, relax, have gatherings, whatever... it's a nice park for all of those things.
What a great park to just sit and relax. Has a covered pavilion and scattered picnic tables. Plenty of trees around for shade. Could use a little more designated parking, but I don't think this should be a problem, as you can park on the side streets.
Pavilion, walking circle, playground and it's always well maintained. The playground is cute. If the weather is right, definitely picnic vibes.
