Phi Theta Kappa is an international honor society of the two year college. Its purpose is to recognize and encourage scholarship and leadership among two-year college students.

We meet on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month in SS 139.

Beta Alpha Beta Chapter - ByLaws

CHAPTER 1. Name of Chapter
The name of this chapter of Phi Theta Kappa shall be Beta Alpha Beta.



CHAPTER 2. Purpose

The purpose of Beta Alpha Beta Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Cerritos College shall be the promotion of scholarship, the development of leadership and service and the cultivation of fellowship among qualified students of this college.



CHAPTER 3. Membership

Section 1.Types of membership in Chapter shall consist of member, provisional member, alumni member, and honorary member as defined in the Phi Theta Kappa Constitution and Bylaws.*

A. Member.

In addition to meeting membership eligibility requirements as stated in the Phi Theta Kappa Constitution and Bylaws,* each candidate for membership must have completed at least 12 semester hours of associate degree course work, with an associate degree applicable grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale, and adhere to the school conduct code and possess recognized qualities of citizenship. Grades for courses completed at other institutions will not be considered when determining membership eligibility. A cumulative GPA of 3.0 must be maintained to remain in good standing. Failure to maintain the required cumulative GPA will result in the member being removed from good standing as stated in the Phi Theta Kappa Constitution and Bylaws.* Failure to meet good standing requirements as stated in the Phi Theta Kappa Constitution and Bylaws* will cause membership and all membership privileges to be revoked.

B. Provisional Member.

A provisional member shall be a student who, in the opinion of Beta Alpha Beta Chapter, has shown an active interest in the affairs of the Society and who serves the Society in some special capacity, but who does not meet the full requirements for active membership in the Society. A provisional member shall not have the right to vote, hold office, or to represent the chapter at meetings of the Society. A provisional member must be a student currently enrolled in associate degree course work at Cerritos College, adhere to school conduct code, and possess recognized qualities of citizenship. Provisional members may pay local chapter dues of $15 per semester, but are not required to pay the international and regional induction fee until they have qualified for full membership.

C. Alumni Member.

An alumnus member shall be a former member of the Society who terminated active membership in good standing and who was enrolled for at least one year in a two-year college.

D. Honorary Member.

An honorary member shall be a person who, in the opinion of the Society or of Beta Alpha Beta Chapter, has rendered distinguished service. National* honorary membership shall be conferred at the discretion of the Executive Committee and local honorary membership shall be conferred at the discretion of Beta Alpha Beta Chapter.

E. Transfer Member. A member from another Phi Theta Kappa chapter may transfer membership to Beta Alpha Beta Chapter if he or she is currently enrolled at Cerritos College and meets the maintenance GPA of the chapter.



CHAPTER 4. Chapter Advisor(s)
Chapter Advisors shall be responsible for the guidance and approval of local activities and shall act on behalf of official college administration on matters pertaining to the Society or the Beta Alpha Beta Chapter. One advisor shall be designated to be the liaison between International Headquarters and Beta Alpha Beta Chapter. The designated advisor shall have the additional responsibilities of overseeing the completion and submission of member names and fees, as well as the Chapter Annual Report to Headquarters.



CHAPTER 5. Officers
Section 1. All officers must be members of Phi Theta Kappa, in good standing, have a GPA of 3.0 must be carrying a course load of 5 units or more.

Section 2. The Beta Alpha Beta Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa shall have the following officers: President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, and Public Relations Officer.A chapter may elect additional officers.

Section 3. The duties of the PRESIDENT shall include:
a. Prepare agendas for and preside over all business meetings.
b. Present business to the organization.
c. Develop goals for the chapter in collaboration with other officers and advisor(s).
d. Oversee chapter projects and activities.
e. Oversee membership drives.
f. Serve as main liaison to ASCC; submit required ASCC/Student Activities paperwork.
g. Appoint and establish any necessary committees; serve as an ex-officio member on all committees.
h. Provide leadership in organizing and preside over information sessions and induction ceremonies.
i. Originate requisitions for money in the absence of the treasurer.
j. Vote only in case of a tie.

Section 4. The duties of the VICE PRESIDENT shall include:
a. Perform all duties of the president in the event of president’s absence. b. Assist the president in organizing membership drives, information sessions, and induction ceremonies.
c. Coordinate committees as needed.
d. Submit to Regional Coordinator and Headquarters reports of chapter activities and Five-Star Chapter Update Forms.
e. Serve as liaison to outside parties as needed.

Section 5. The duties of the TREASURER shall include:
a. Maintain and keep accurate records of chapter account.
b. Receive and account for monies, making deposits as needed.
c. Keep track of chapter fundraising finances.
d. Work with president and advisor(s) on approving budgets for projects and activities.
e. Make a report of finances at business meetings as needed.
f. Take inventory of chapter materials and report to president and advisor(s) each semester.

Section 6. The duties of the SECRETARY shall include:

a. Record attendance at meetings.
b. Take minutes and maintain records of meetings.
c. Maintain chapter calendar of events.
d. Communicate with members about meeting dates and topics, as well as other chapter projects and activities.
e. Maintain membership directory.

Section 7. The duties of the PUBLIC RELATIONS Officer(s) shall include:
a. Promote chapter projects and activities to chapter members and larger campus community as appropriate.
b. Create, post, and distribute posters and flyers publicizing chapter projects and activities.
c. Draft and submit press releases to area newspapers as needed.
d. Represent the chapter at ASCC Inter-Club Council meetings.
e. Serve in lieu of president as liaison to ASCC as needed.

Section 8. ALL chapter officers are expected to:
a. Represent Phi Theta Kappa in various campus and community events.
b. Assist in the development of calendar of activities.
c. Contribute ideas for meeting topics.
d. Support chapter projects and activities through leadership and active involvement.
e. Provide support for membership drives.
f. Assist with the organization and facilitation of information sessions and induction ceremonies.



CHAPTER 6. Election of officers
Section 1. In addition to meeting requirements as stated in the Phi Theta Kappa Constitution and Bylaws,* all candidates for office must be members of Phi Theta Kappa, in good standing.

Section 2. Elections shall be held at the fourth or fifth meeting during the spring semester of each year.

Section 3. Each elected officer shall serve a one-year term. Officers shall hold office from the time of their inauguration to the time of the next inauguration.

Section 4. Nominations from the floor can be made at the same meeting as the election.

Section 5. A simple majority vote shall elect any officer.



CHAPTER 7. Open officer positions
Section 1. In any case when an officer must resign his or her office, the Chapter President shall have the power to make a temporary appointment in consultation with the Chapter Advisor(s) until an election can be held. Once an election is held, a simple majority vote shall elect the new officer.

Section 2. If any officer fails to fulfill the duties of his or her office, is absent from three consecutive general and/or executive meetings, misappropriates or misuses Chapter funds, or fails to uphold the responsibilities of membership, he or she may be removed from office. A three-fourths vote of Chapter officers shall be necessary to remove an officer. An officer failing to maintain active membership in the Society shall forfeit office.

Section 3. The duties of any office not filled through either election or appointment shall be divided among the existing officers.



CHAPTER 8. Meetings
Section 1. All business meetings will follow a general agenda that may include:

a. Call to order
b. Roll call
c. Reading of the minutes
d. Treasurer's report
e. Committee reports
f. Old business
g. New business
h. Announcements
i. Adjournment

Section 2. Regular meetings shall be held two times per month during the Fall and Spring semesters. Chapter business requiring a vote shall be determined by a simple majority vote.

Section 3. Executive meetings shall be held at least once each month.

Section 4. All business meetings will follow the guidelines outlined in the parliamentary procedure of the Associated Students of Cerritos College governance manual.

Section 5. Special committee meetings shall be called by the chairman of said committee. Procedures at such meetings are left to the discretion of the chairman. Reports of each meeting shall be given to the members at the following chapter meeting.



CHAPTER 9. Finances
Section 1. Finances for this chapter will be raised by projects voted on during a regular meeting.

Section 2. Payment of the International Membership fee must be received by the chapter treasurer before members can be inducted.

Section 3. All members must pay the local fee prior to induction.

Section 4. All members must pay the regional fee prior to induction.

Section 5. Disbursement vouchers must be submitted with supporting invoices and/or statements attached to the original invoice.

Section 6. Financial records of the chapter shall be annually audited by the advisor.



CHAPTER 10. Amendments and revision

Section 1. The chapter bylaws may be amended by a vote of two-thirds of voting members present at any regular meeting, provided that the proposed amendment has been presented at a previous meeting. Any changes to the bylaws must be sent to Headquarters for final approval.
