We are a non-profit organization formed to provide a registry for information and exhibits related to the railroads that served the Piedmont Area of NC.
The Piedmont Railroad Museum & Library (PRM&L) is a not-for-profit organization formed to provide a repository for information and exhibits about the railroads, past and present that served the Piedmont region of North Carolina, and to provide a destination for viewing and hands-on/minds-on participation by the public. The Museum will operate as The Piedmont Model Railroad Park. Our planned facilities are designed to display past and current railroad items, a library for research, meeting area, and operating model railroad layouts depicting the Piedmont region.
The Piedmont Railroad Museum & Park will contain a building featuring displays of prototype (full-size) railroad equipment, exhibition of related equipment, plus dynamic interactive displays where visitors can see the railroads in action, simulate being an engineer in a locomotive, and experience the evolution of railroads from the early days to the current period. The Library will feature books, magazines and videos of railroads of the Piedmont region so interested members of the Museum and the public can carry out research about these railroads. Finally, several scale model railroad clubs will have their layouts located in the facility so visitors can see trains running in a prototypical Manner.
Outside facilities will feature a 2ft. narrow gauge railroad, a 7-1/2” gauge railroad (also called Live Steam), both of which can be ridden by park visitors, along with recreation and picnic facilities, and finally a building for maintenance and housing of the outdoor railroads. The 2ft narrow gauge railroad will be used to transport people to various attractions in our park.
Docent led tours of the exhibits and displays will provide visitors with an appreciation of the history of railroading in the Piedmont region, plus details of the individual equipment and exhibits, and how they would work on a railroad.
The Piedmont Railroad Museum & Library is currently searching for a suitable site for the Piedmont Model Railroad Park in the three counties comprising the Research Triangle Park area of North Carolina. Preliminary plans for the proposed facility for the Park are complete and discussed elsewhere in this document. It may well be prudent for the Museum to locate temporarily in another available facility while funding is obtained to finance the permanent facility.
