I started 2 classes. For one class, the professor tested us on information that wasn't in any supplied resources. For the other class, the instructor wanted our chapter questions unreasonably sourced and cited more than any English paper I've had to write. I ended up dropping the unreasonable professor's class. And with this, I realized Pierce College isn't very military friendly. Pierce allows students to withdraw from their three campuses with a 100% refund before the first week of instruction is completed, which all-in-all is short but fine. This is where the college becomes frustrating as an active duty service member. Once the deadline for 100% refund is over, Pierce offers a 50% refund deadline to ONLY Fort Steilacoom and Puyallup campuses. If you do not withdraw before the first refund deadline as a military member taking classes at their JBLM campus, you're screwed and have to pay TA completely back. There is no 50% refund for some reason. With this, I have dropped the classes I scheduled for Spring quarter and will not be going back to this school for education.
I started classes in January of 2021. One of my first classes was an English class. I was making a solid B the entire length of the class up until the last week. My grade dropped to a 54%. Apparently the assignments marked/worded as optional I do have screen shots were not actually optional. My professor gave me an incomplete grade pending an essay I have screenshots and e-mail receipts for this as well. I turned the essay in, but my professor never graded it or changed my grade. A few months later it still had not been changed. I went to the school to inquire about it and I was told the advisors would try to talk to someone to figure out what happened. We moved a few months later and school/grades were pushed aside. Fast forward 2 years and I am enrolling in Nursing school. I received my transcripts today and that’s when I found out that I still have an incomplete in that class. The systems are down and the directory on their website is undergoing maintenance so I can’t even get in touch with anyone to try and get this resolved. Another issue I had was with my statistics professor but worth noting as that negatively effected my transcripts as well. After being out of school for almost 20 years, intro to statistics is the math class they decided to put me in. I struggled. The professor over explained some things and under explained other things. I communicated with him to let him know that I was struggling and he acknowledged it. I took advantage of the tutoring that was offered but I was still struggling. During this time my husband was put in the hospital. I communicated this to my professor. He stopped responding to me. He wouldn’t open any of the assignments to me, I finally called the school and complained about what was happening and magically my assignments were opened to me. By this point I was so far behind that there was no catching up. I’m really disappointed in my experience with Pierce College. Their students deserve better. Especially considering most students have to take out loans to pay for these classes.
JBLM has amazing professors and defiinitly helps out the transfer student. The only reason I did not give 5 stars is because most classes are in the evenings. It is catered more to the military member rather than spouses and the main pierce campuses do not support transfer students. It is very difficult for spouses with dependents to take evening classes since children are out of school and daycare centers close at 6. If the service member is deployed, sent to YTC, NTC, ALC, SLC, BLC, or any type of training or school the dependent is left without a lot of options. Teachers are amazing and extremely accommodating if something comes up. Most are retirees or spouses themselves and understand the chaos. Online classes are amazing for spouses. I am referring more to classes that require a lab or students who are not adept in online learning. Most online teachers are unable to call or contact you over the phone so a quick question about an assignment takes 12-24 hours to hear a response.
This is the worst school I have ever attended. I have come across some great professors but overall my experience has been terrible. Their financial aid office takes weeks-months to answer an email or even the phone and when they do reply or answer the phone their attitude is deplorable.
Go to another school at JBLMs Ed center. It's obvious none of these people wanna be there.
