Beautiful ride up the mountain. Our tour guide was really awesome, and even though it was blisteringly hot outside, with the windows open especially once you got a little up there it really cooled down and felt delightful. Highly recommend doing it, and also making reservations in advance if you want to select your seats as they fill up pretty quickly during busy seasons unless you don't care where you sit or if you will sit with other people you came with. My parents both used canned oxygen to fight off the elevation, so highly recommend, especially for people visiting from lower elevation. Didn't realize until I took this tour that America the Beautiful was said to have been written about the view from pikes peak. Thought that was pretty cool.
This train ride is well worth the cost of admission. The ride itself is very smooth and relaxing. The staff keeps you entertained the whole way up the mountain with random facts about the area, the railway, and the wildlife. The altuide is no joke, though. If you think you're going to have any issues with it, I highly recommend buying a can of oxygen. They sell them at the train stationnot sure how much, but we picked one up a local 7-Eleven for $23. Which we actually ended up needing when we got to the top. It really helped us with breathing. The donuts at the top were fresh and delicious. The pizza was good. The hot chocolate was very tasty. The restrooms were very clean and very well maintained. The views are literally breathtaking. This place is amazing and definitely worth checking out.
Pretty expensive but it was a cool experience, the people were informative on history and things on the way up and down. You only have an hour roughly at the top which is just enough time to stay on the path and walk around to read all the information signs.. I wish they allowed more time on the top and or allowed you to take another train down. Kinda weird they allow random hikers or runners that make it to the top to board any train but not the passengers. The trains are nice and clean.. the new trains have nice windows to open and close. Nice views and they are open year round but if it's too windy they might not go all the way to the top. I will say also the seats are small and crammy... you will touch legs.
Great experience. Get a seat on the 3 seat side for best views after the first 10 min. Even through it was foggy at the bottom you can still get great views. Cold at the top. Snow and ice in mid July. I had enough time to circle the top, explore the gift shop, walk through the education center, and get/eat donuts before it was time to get back on the train. I went to the gift shop before getting food to avoid the line. So just watch for there the lines are shortest and watch the time so you can board the train on time. Listen for the whistles.
We sat in front and if you can afford it, it is well worth the view. We sat in front going up...lots of great pics. On way down, you are riding backwards, but still magnificent view. Side note...we went on week day and had to wait 45 min for bus ride back to our car in Manitou. Not sure we would recommend. Also, bus could not fit everyone on it and lots of people had given up and walked. This is no reflection on the train itself.
This was a fun way to get to the summit. The late morning start required parking off-site. When we arrived, the parking attendant said, "Everyone is showing up at the same time. This is the last shuttle. You might not be able to get on." This is incredibly poor customer service. We arrived around 10:30 am. The last shuttle was to arrive at 10:40 am. We followed directions and made it before the required time. Maybe this company needs to consider giving specific times when you purchase tickets to make sure there are enough seats on every bus. The seating in the cars was a little uncomfortable. But the entire experience was fun. I so wish we had more time on the summit. 50 minutes was not enough and felt rushed. Abby are conductor was very nice! Our engineer Patrick got us up and down the mountain safely. I'd definitely recommend this to anyone visiting the area.
The Cog is a really great way to experience Pike's Peak. Although you can drive to the peak itself, going via the Cog has less traffic and the expertise of the conductor. Parking near the station itself gets really messy and we ended up paying $20, but it looked like there was a shuttle. I recommend getting a ticket for the the 3-seat-side, but we weren't disappointed on the 2-seat-side. It's pretty chilly at the top, so bring layers. They give you 40 minutes which was barely enough for us to do the round and see the visitor center. Be on time for the return trip because our train didn't wait for people that came late and they can't guarantee that there will be room on the next one.
Absolutely worth the price! We bought our tickets online and reserved our seats. Even though it was hazy there's plenty to see during the ride. Once at the Summit Visitor Center 14,115ft above sea level the view is amazing. There's a free water bottle refill station in the gift shop, and a cafeteria style restaurant, restrooms, and the mountains history. I do recommend taking a jacket it is much cooler at the top, and parking in town take the shuttle to/from the depot. There are restrooms, and a gift shop at depot.
It was really a cool experience for the whole family. I took the train 20+ yrs ago and was at first disappointed that they had modernized the train no longer an old school smoke stack but a red European style train now . But the train did look really cool and it was reassuring to know it had been updated and maintained. The views from the huge windows are amazing, and of course, from the top as well. Bring a jacket, even in July. When you get near the top there was a bit of snow on the ground and it was in the 40's. Only complaint would be that I would prefer if windows stayed up. Each set of passengers can determine if their window is open or closed. We had a woman just ahead of us who insisted on bragging about how she loved the cold and was leaving her window down, even when we stopped at 'windy point' and everyone around her was obviously chilled ... so the rest of us froze while she enjoyed herself... the 3 seat side the car affords the best valley views. But if you are afraid of heights, I suggest the 2 seat side. The train moves backwards down the mountain, so whichever side you choose will be on the same side of the mountain both ways.
Awesome experience, much less stressful than taking that 159 curve drive up the mountain. Views are stellar. New trains are cozy but solid. Staff was very accommodating. But be on time, the train sticks to it's schedule and will leave you behind if you don't respect it!!
