Pioneer Monument

Description

The Pioneer Monument is a granite monument supporting bronze figures and bas reliefs created by Frank Happersberger and financed by the estate of James Lick. It is located on Fulton Street between Hyde and Larkin Streets in the Civic Center, of San Francisco, California. It was dedicated on November 29, 1894.DescriptionThe monument consists of a large female figure of Minerva or Athena, the goddess of wisdom and war, representing California on a column with four bronze reliefs representing "Crossing the Sierra," "Vaqueros Lassoing a Bull, "Trapper Trading Skins with Indians," and "California's Progress under American Rule", as well as portrait medallions of important personages in California's past, Sir Francis Drake, John Sutter, John Fremont, Father Junipero Serra, and the monument's benefactor, James Lick. There are also four piers surrounding the base of the column, supporting sculptures. Two are female figures allegorically representing Commerce and Plenty, and two are groupings of three figures each. One of these is titled "Early Days" and contains a missionary, a Native American, and a vaquero. The other is titled "In '49'", commemorating the California Gold Rush, containing three gold miners.

Nice location, wonderful statue, but the area surrounded it is not taken care of: too much trash around it in the vegetation area, statue is dirty with bird's manure, and many strange people are wondering around without any purpose.
It would be more appropriate as a statue of an overflowing toilet, much like this part of the city.
Up until just before the pandemic shutdown the Pioneer Monument was a central statue surrounded by 4 others on raised pedistles, sometime around that period, without warning, public comment or input from anyone, as far as I can tell, the statue on the North side of the monument was , like a covert delta force operation, removed in the middle of the night. It is still as of 23 August 22 gone. Why you ask? Great question. My guess is that it was deemed politically incorrect as it was a scene with I believe 3 different characters depicting christians berating an American Indian. It had been there forever and all of a sudden it was removed because it actually depicted what likely happened. The truth may be painful but we must not deny our past otherwise we are doomed to repeat it.....that said I'd love to know who signed off on removing the statues and publicly make them give an accounting of the decision process behind this very short sighted knee-jerk action.
Amazing monument! Reminded me great history of California!
A great moment with interesting history unfortunately spoilt by the undersirables in the area.
5/25/22 Wednesday Some construction going on.
This monument is currently inaccessible as a safe sleeping camp has been set up in this area and only residents of the safe sleeping site are allowed to enter. I am unaware of when the monument will have access in the future.

Beautiful statue but for some reason this area always seems over populated with homeless. It's cold and there's not very much shelter so it doesn't seem like a good place to sleep but it's always crowded.
There is major talk and few articles written about sf planning to remove this statue! Its a pretty big deal for the culture. Its worth stopping by and giving it a good stare down.
