Why should I consider Pittsburgh Urban Christian School for my child?
The Pittsburgh Urban Christian School provides children with an education grounded in the truth that God is Creator, Sustainer, and Redeemer. We are nondenominational and welcome all persons. We are responding to Christ’s call to “make disciples” and pray that our children will know Christ and come to develop the unique gifts and abilities that He has given them. We teach respect for all persons and seek unity as brothers and sisters in Christ. We stress Christ’s encouragement to “love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, strength and mind; and love your neighbor as yourself.” This “law of love” is our polestar.
We seek to educate and nurture the whole child. Children are gifted with the desire to learn about the world around them. We foster this desire by allowing children to learn using a variety of methods and to work at a pace that is appropriate for the child’s developmental and academic progress. We also help children learn to be a part of a group and to be sensitive to the needs of others. Children are taught in cooperative settings and are given opportunities to teach and learn from one another.
We believe the fundamentals of reading, writing, arithmetic and thinking skills provide a solid foundation for future learning. We provide opportunities for children to formulate questions, use a variety of resources to find answers, present their findings to others and to use their new knowledge to solve problems. A positive and successful start in the elementary years prepares a child for a lifetime of learning.
Pittsburgh Urban Christian School is an urban school. In the midst of a culture distorted by sin, we are committed to being redeeming agents of change. While many are fleeing the city and its accompanying economic and racial realities, Pittsburgh Urban Christian School is intentionally situated in a diverse urban neighborhood. We believe that God is powerfully working in the city and we seek to be part of God’s work here. We strive to be “salt” and “light” as we point to the path of dignity, wisdom and hope that Jesus Christ offers.
We are committed to having a multicultural governing board, staff, and student body. Pittsburgh Urban Christian School has maintained a commitment to diversity since the school began in 1981. This commitment has been reaffirmed in the Strategic Plan for PUCS 2000. We believe that the best education we can offer our children includes opportunities to interact with a wide variety of people. We seek meaningful interaction across the racial and cultural lines that often divide us and commit to celebrate the similarities and differences God has created.
