Playland-Not-At-The-Beach

Description

Playland-Not-At-The-Beach is a non-profit, family-oriented museum in El Cerrito, California celebrating America's bygone amusements, operated entirely by volunteers. The museum's 25 exhibits have specific emphasis on the attractions that once existed at Playland at the Beach and the Sutro Baths & Museum. Included are numerous artifacts from the original Whitney’s Playland at the Beach, including the giant clown's blue hat from the top of the Playland Funhouse, and Walking Charley, one of the original hand carved life-size wooden characters from the terrace above Laughing Sal in the front window of the Fun House. Thousands of historical items are present, from cases of never-opened books of Playland tickets to original signage, parts of rides and games, rare photographs, employee uniforms, and prizes from the Playland arcade games. Additionally, there are over 30 pinball games, carnival skill games, dioramas celebrating Halloween and the Yuletide season, and miniature circuses, including the Marcks Family Miniature Circus.HistoryPlayland-Not-At-The-Beach came into fruition in 2000 when El Cerrito businessman, Richard Tuck, purchased a 10000sqft building that was formerly a grocery store. Tuck, an enthusiastic collector for the majority of his life, used the former store as a place to keep various objects he had acquired, including Playland artifacts. Upon hearing of his Playland relics, community members began to show an interest and volunteered to organize and catalog his collections. Tuck then made the decision to turn the building into a Museum dedicated to Fun. After eight years of designing and construction, Playland-Not-At-The-Beach opened on May 31, 2008.

A fun mix of pinball machines, older arcade games, and a small midway where you can win tickets for prizes. Comprised of a few small rooms there's something for kids and adults here. 30 pinball machines from vintage to new. Flat rate gets unlimited games. They were having a kid's magic show when I was there, and there's an "after dark" night for adults only every month!
A fun place for kids and family. A magic show, and all the pinball you can play for one price. A couple of small museums as well.
We love this place! We miss Richard, and love Frank and his wonderful crew. Had a wonderful, but bittersweet visit today. We are so very sad that this place only had one week left to be open. If you haven't been.....go see it. You too will fall in love!
So much fun! A big collection of wonderful memorabilia from bygone days. A Museum of fascinating dioramas, pinball arcades, amusement, magicians and games to entertain both young and old. Bring in your own lunch, and spend the day happily having fun -- as people enjoy this beautiful "peek back in time" to a quieter and more gentle time. By the way, if you remember "Laughing Sal" -- she's HERE! And a very sad update - the news reports are that PNATB is soon losing it's home - due to the building being sold! Hurry up and go, before you no longer CAN!
The most amazing place on Earth. Period. Will deeply be missed by thousands.
This place is quite unique! I appreciate its historical elements as well. If you're looking for a different experience, I highly recommend Playland-Not-at-the-Beach. My children really enjoyed the magic show. Frank is a real delight and his Eartha Kitt memorabilia is amazing! I personally loved all the miniatures on display and there is an adequate assortment of pinball machines and a few other historic games as well; most of which are free play. We will certainly visit again!
What a gem! So incredibly sad to see it go. If you ever were thinking of going, now is the time.
I was nervous because another review said there was displays and pictures featuring minstrels shows etc. I didn't see anything like that thank goodness. It was very interesting but I felt unsettled there. Strange energy. I also felt like staff followed us and kept an eye on us even though everything is on camera. They were friendly and helpful, just too much presence.
A hidden gem inside you would never expect from the bland exterior. Over 30 pinball machines all set to free-play, but rather than just being an arcade, there are lots of other old penny-arcade amusements and meticulous museum displays from the historic San Francisco Playland Boardwalk. Bringing your own food and drink is encouraged, making it an incredible bargain. Great for kids and parties. Or, if you have no kids like me, I recommend one of the twice-monthly adult nights when the admission is cheaper and... well.. there aren't any kids!
Visited here with my younger brother on a weekend. They have many different pinball machines and a few interesting dioramas with various themes. They did a fun comedy magic show and also have a some classic carnival games.
