This library is perfect for those with little ones! They have an incredible selection of children’s books for all ages, and a beautiful, interactive outdoor play area for children, as well as a story time area! I will say, if you’re looking for somewhere super quiet to study, this isn’t the library for you as it’s just one large room and it has a LOT of echo. For me though, as a mom with littles, it’s perfect!
The new library is beautiful. It is very modern looking but still friendly and welcoming. Nice open areas to sit, laptops to check out, phone charging and electrical sockets. And the bookshelves are very neat. Staff is super friendly. Beautiful.
I am floored that this is a public library - it's one of the most beautiful libraries I've seen! But the real reason I'm here: to thank the cape-less hero who helped me this evening. I walked in 10 minutes before closing needing to print something. He saw me out of the corner of his eye and interrupted his conversation to ask if I needed assistance. He set me up with a computer to print, and when I needed help, was literally running to the front desk to problem-solve before closing. Running! Before closing! To help someone print something in a public library! The average person doesn't do that for strangers. It's these small acts of kindness that make me excited about humanity and about being out in the world. THANK YOU sir with the short brown curly hair, jeans, and green plaid shirt. The world is grateful for your positivity.
To be honest, with the buildup and anticipation for the new pleasant hill library I was kind of disappointed. Keep in mind I may be a little biased because the old library was a very special and sentimental place for me. The new library seems much smaller, and this isn't helped by most of it being one open room with a crowded entrance full of tables. A problem with the original library was finding a way for excited kids and adults wanting to quietly study to coexist, instead of helping with this problem the echoey open design with children's storytimes in the middle exacerbates it. There is a pretty nicely sized quiet room which I appreciate, but I still miss the variety of different places to settle down with a book that the original library offered. The Lego, sewing, and other activities were a big highlight of the old library, but it usually felt quite crowded, surprisingly, the space set aside for these seems to be even smaller. I have a lot of faith in the kind and creative people who are a part of the library, so I really hope that things improve, but right now it's a place I would rather just pick up a book and leave rather than feeling like I could spend the whole day there like I did with the original pleasant hill library.
It's loud all the time. And they host kids events in the center so the sound just echoes. The power sources at the studying desks are floor access and are locked, so there really isn't access to power your laptop or phone. The one thing that makes being at this library sort of tolerable are the large windows with tons of natural light... bummer there's not a quiet studying zone...
I had expected more. I know they just opened, but they need a better layout. There is a decent amount of parking. Little to no shaded parking or outside shaded area to sit. All in the direct sun. The entrance while grand. You walk into big desk of new books. Creating a narrow entrance. The check in an out area with staff is off to the side but cause of the large tables with books. Creates an odd line of ppl in the direct pathway to walk. The self check out to the right of the entrance is great but would have been cool had one been lowered for kids to check out. The center is wide open. All the kids books are to the right. Unfortunately with the vast amount of space this place has. It wasn’t used for a kids section correctly. Kids are visual an they need to see books cover first. Similar to Barns an Nobles. There were more kids playing outside then actually reading books inside. It was oddly loud. I don’t think ppl parents realize it’s a library an not a place to take your kids to play. The kids area needs work. An while I get it’s a library and things are by author. When you have kids it’s by subject to them. Making searching for a book much harder. The subject bins were a good idea had they not been used to just throw books back in. The last few times we went the picture book bins were completely empty. The outside area has one play thing an one ball. Leaving tons of kids waiting to play with this thing for almost half an hour because most adults don’t know coming courtesy of sharing after 5 mins. I’ve been here 4 times an my kids still not be able to play with the things outside because those playing with it will not move from it after 20+ mins. The staff was wonderful. The place clean. However it was very very humid at 11am. No AC going an only a few fans on. We decided to grab a book an go as it was just way to hot inside to stay too. Upon checking out - u less your kid can write their own name then you must create an account. Also if you kids have their own account. Your not allowed to have access to it an see what they are checking out. Though I’m confused how it works if they check out a book an don’t return it. Who pays for it then? I know this place is new. I think they need a better set up inside for the kids section to better find books. They also need to control the fact it’s not a place to just show up an play. The outside area is to enjoy lunch an such. Not show up an leave your kid for 30 mins while you stay inside an play on your phone. I will come back cause my child loves books but the ease of finding them was not fun. Hopefully they can figure a better system. More forward facing books. My biggest issue isn’t even with the Library itself. It’s with the lack of respect for the books shown. We have picked up several kids books every other week. Covered in food, stickers, juice, or torn pages. Please refrain from letting your kids ruin things that are not theirs. We have had to return so many books that are damaged and unable to read them.
New library, which over all is well designed with better than average computer access points, reasonably comfortable chairs and excellent lighting. One HUGE caveat : whoever designed this place absolutely failed to understand the levels of noise created by small children. Their area should have been isolated with massive insulation; there's nothing quite like attempting to study or complete a project only to be interrupted by sustained screaming of a 2/3 year old. True, it's not the child's fault per se, but that of the moron parents who - knowing that their child has a limited attention span and will react loudly insist on bringing them to the library regardless - and this is a continuous issue.
This is a terrible place to study, because it is so loud, even before school gets out. It’s also dirty. There are a bunch on tables and computers to use, but as soon as the kids come after school, it sounds like a playground and they basically take over the whole place. Also, if you have your own computer, there are very few tables that have an outlet next to it.
Friendly, helpful, and courteous staff! Comfortable place to read to our young children.
The staff are very helpful. Special shoutout to Patrick for his outstanding service - he’s very accommodating and goes out of his way to help patrons get the books they want or need. My son really enjoys graphic novels and he’s helped us customize our grab bag! I heard how busy the library is with short staff so thank you, Patrick, for the extra kindness!
