PocahontasCounty Historical Museum

About

From pre-history to today, through artifacts, documents and photographs, the museum tells the story of this area, which now is called Pocahontas County, West Virginia.

Description

The museum is owned and operated by the Pocahontas County Historical Society. The building, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was the home of Anna Price and Frank Hunter who were married in the house upon its completion in 1904. The house was acquired by the Society and opened as a museum in June 1963 in celebration of the centennial of the State of West Virginia. All the contents were donated by local people and reflect the history of the area from 11,000 B.C to the 20th century. There are special exhibits on the settlement of the area, the Civil War, the logging boom , handmade tools and household equipment, early medicine, and women's crafts. While everything in the collection pertains to local history, it reflects the history of West Virginia and the USA.

Admission to the museum is free to members and children under 6, other children pay $2 and adults $4. A family admission (2 adults and any accompanying children) costs $10.

Also on the grounds are a Civil War cemetery, the Price family cemetery and a log cabin (c. 1835).
