FOR OVER 50 YEARS!
A Little History...
The Pocono Summit Fire Company, chartered July, 1961, was originally The Pocono Summit Civic Club, formed February 17, 1959. Ninety Seven men are listed as members on the March, 1959 attendance pages. Johnnies Pocono Summit Inn was the site of the first meeting.
During the two plus years as a civic club several accomplishments are listed in the minutes: bus shelters, street lights, speed limit signs, playground equipment, softball games (married men vs: single men), clambakes, bazzars, and weekly dances. (The band cost $55.00.) The civic club even formed a "Boundary Line Committee" to decide where the property line should be between Pocono Summit and Mt. Pocono Borough.
Representatives were elected to attend the Supervisors meetings of Tobyhanna and Coolbaugh Townships.
The women of the community were asked to take an active part in the community in July of 1960 and attended the September, 1960 Meeting. They formed an auxiliary and assisted the civic club and later fire company with very successful fund raising activities.
The first recorded minutes of the fire company are dated November 13, 1961 and mention paying Fire Company Attorney Maxwell Cohen $112.74 for legal services. They also approved a bill to purchase sand and gravel to start construction of a fire house. The minutes that follow show that the men of the club built the fire house which is now the Social Hall.
The property where the present fire house stands was purchased in 1972, later cleared and construction began in the fall of 1984.
The first female firefighter was approved for membership in September, 1987.
In September, 1986 the first suggestion of the Ladies becomming part of the Fire Company is mentioned and the merger took place on September 20, 1988.
