Nice little hike. Missed the 30 story building stair hike to the actual light facility, but enjoyed the view from the lookout at the base of the original light house. The whale bones were cool and the views were gorgeous. Thank the lord for the nice clean restroom facility.
The parking lot is small, and there are no parking signs posted nearby, so be patient. The walk to the lighthouse has a slight incline hill and a slight decline, and it levels out. There is an overview, small with one metal table, and it is time to share space with others. To get to the lighthouse, there are several stairs descending, which means a steep climb up. The lighthouse is a small area. Be careful. No pets are allowed. Be thoughtful of others and keep your pet in the car. Someone may have a fear of dogs. It's terrible how many people feel entitled to disregard the no pets sign.
The view from the top, before the stairs to the light house, is amazing. Go just for that view. The view: to the right is the coastline. Some large rock outcroppings at the shoreline have hundreds of birds on them. The distant sound of their chirping can be heard above whe wind and waves! Know this, those stairs are difficult! You need to be somewhat fit, or you'll be sucking air like a fish out of water. They are not wide enough for two people to pass while stepping. The sign says the distance is equal to a 30-story building. If you decide to venture to the lighthouse, you're in for a treat. So do your cardio and stair master to prepare! The visitor center is thankfully before the stairs. Now, if you think getting to this point is a breeze, think again. You have to hike up a paved hill that, for some strange reason they don't allow anyone up, even to drop off handicapped The parking lot is small for the number of visitors, so you'll probably park even farther downhill! Keep that in mind! Restrooms are at the parking lot. So go before you GO to the lighthouse!
My family and I went here in mid February of this year, and it was a perfect sunny day. It is a bit of a walk to get to the visitor center and the steps are ridiculous to go in and out of the lighthouse. It’s worth every step! The scene is gorgeous, the staff is friendly, and Mother Nature is at its finest there. Parking can be difficult and you may have to park alongside the road. Pro tip: be mindful of how you park so there is room for other cars! Also there is restrooms near the visitor center. Only 2 stalls so the line can be long.
One of the best places to view the sunset. Just a heads up.. during winter it is foggy sometimes. There is a parking lot which gets full soon during weekends. In that case, you can park the car on the road side in that case. Restrooms are available. You have to walk probably 0.5 miles to the light house. It's usually windy and gets cold.. please carry warm clothes. Tip - plan little ahead and visit the cypress tree tunnel spot. It comes along the way to light house and it's a good spot to click some nice pics.
We love going to the Point Reyes Lights House. I would recommend dressing warm. I think there has been very strong and cold breeze every time we have been here. Great place for ship and whale watching.
Incredible views! Really worth the trip if you are in the Bay Area. Just as a heads up though, it can get really crowded if the weather is nice which will make parking a bit difficult. Also, this is a lookout point that is very exposed to the ocean, so expect it to be windy!
Great drive out to the light house, great views. They close the path down to the lighthouse if winds are 40+ mph. It is a clime down but would not miss out on this
Not much to see on overcast days. And given the terrain, I bet they get a lot of them. Still, not a bad way to spend the day - we drove out from San Jose. Would do it again.
This entire area is beautiful!! So many things to see, the hiking trails have breathtaking views all around!!! Highly recommend!!
