The Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome Association Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that provides vetted, trusted information about PCOS and its treatment options to patients and their doctors. PCOS is a hormonal condition affecting millions of women worldwide, which requires lifelong management to preserve health. Untreated PCOS typically leads to diabetes and other chronic health conditions. Although there is no cure, women with PCOS can thrive with proper management. They can often have healthy pregnancies, and can lead exemplary healthy lives, through use of diet, exercise, and/or medication.
The Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome Association exists to provide comprehensive information, support, and advocacy for women and girls with the condition known as polycystic ovary syndrome.
What is PCOS?
It's a hormonal condition that affects about 7% of all women. It is believed to be a "pre-diabetic" condition, where insulin does not work effectively and therefore too much of it is circulating in the bloodstream. This imbalance sets off a series of other hormonal problems in the female reproductive system, skin, hair, and metabolic systems (fat storage). Women with PCOS typically have irregular menstrual cycles, facial hair, body hair, adult acne, and about 60% experience unexplainable or uncontrollable weight gain. Women with PCOS that have not progressed to diabetes will NOT test positive for diabetes. These symptoms may be their only warning that something is wrong, and that action needs to be taken to preserve overall health! Many primary care doctors do not diagnose PCOS properly, and simply advise patients to lose weight, avoid stress, or take medication to relieve the symptoms. However, it is critical to treat the underlying condition to prevent diabetes in the future. PCOSA is here to educate these doctors as well as patients about PCOS and its treatment, to improve the quality of life of women with PCOS, and to preserve and restore overall health.
