Popcorn Park was established in 1977 for the sole purpose of providing a refuge for abandoned, injured, ill, exploited, abused or elderly wildlife, birds, exotic and farm animals.
Popcorn Park Animal Refuge was established in 1977 for the sole purpose of providing a refuge for wildlife that were sick, elderly, abandoned, abused, or injured, and which could no longer survive in its natural habitat. In a short time and as the need arose, we expanded to include exotic and domestic farm animals. All our residents once faced these circumstances, as well as exploitation and illegal ownership.
You may be greeted at the gate by a parade of peacocks, around the corner you’ll see an African lioness, tigers, mountain lions, Princess our world famous camel, emus, rheas. muntjacs, binturongs, primates as well as native wildlife such as white-tailed and fallow deer, a bobcat, and American black bears. Farm animals such as horses, steer, sheep, pigs and goats often look for a handout, and reptiles and tortoises enjoy their own special places. In addition, you'll find numerous species of birds have made themselves comfortable throughout the park.
But what makes Popcorn Park so special is that each animal was rescued from suffering, exploitation and/or death - each has its own unique story to tell.
The mission of the Associated Humane Societies, Inc., including Popcorn Park Zoo, is to consistently provide the highest quality of care to all animals, domestic and wildlife, including their rescue, housing, veterinary care, placement whenever possible, and when required, a peaceful end. It is also our mission to prevent cruelty to all animals, primarily in New Jersey, but also throughout the United States. This shall be done through direct intervention as well as the promotion of humane education regarding the proper care and treatment of animals at both public and private levels, thereby advancing the humane treatment of animals everywhere.
