Portalli's

About

Portalli's is an upscale Italian restaurant and craft cocktail bar tucked into the main strip of historic Ellicott City.

Description

Set in the heart of beautiful historic Ellicott City, Portalli's is an Italian restaurant like no other. Created by the coordinated vision and leadership of proprietors Evan Brown & Alan Biars and local chef Keith Holsey, Portalli’s was designed to offer a nice mixture of traditional Italian dishes and Italian-inspired preparations unique to Chef Holsey.

Now diners can enjoy the beautiful atmosphere of this classically decorated historic building without breaking the bank. Whether you’re looking for traditional Italian style dishes such as Beef Carpaccio, Lasagna Bolognese, or Spaghetti & Meatballs, or unique preparations like Braised Beef Penne or Veal Short Ribs smothered in a wild mushroom marsala sauce, Portalli’s is the place for you. The Italian-inspired wine list is diverse but approachable for the casual wine drinker, and there has been extra emphasis placed on staff training to ensure each and every guest has left with their expectations exceeded. The goal was to create a restaurant that has as much appeal for families looking for a night on the town as it does for the most critical foodies, and the end result is a restaurant everybody can enjoy.

Excellent service. Among other things, we ordered the fried cheese curds. Considering the prices, we were expecting a little more from the food, but all was satisfactory, and I would eat here again. The location is in a quaint part of town, which made for a nice visit.
Great food and wonderful service. Clabs cakes we're especially good with very little breading. Lamb shank literally fell off the bone and melted in your mouth.
We have visited twice recently. The first time we sat downstairs and were pleasantly surprised at the atmosphere- this isn't the place it was before the flood. Everything is bright and airy feeling. Add that to the great food and we were happy to return. The second time we sat upstairs and enjoyed ourselves even more with the piano player. He wasn't too loud or too soft. I could have a conversation with my husband, and pause to enjoy some good tunes- classics and today's pop
Went here with my wife for our anniversary. Perfect choice. Amazing food. Waiter was well versed in the selections and his recommendations were excellent. The calamari was the best cooked calamari I've ever had and set expectations for the rest of the evening at a high level. They were met. Highly recommended.
Warm, inviting atmosphere. Beautifully redecorated. Food is always fresh and amazing. The crab corn chowder is delish and a definite for every visit. Ghost Bar is a new welcome addition and brunch is next on my list. If not visiting the restaurant, look for Portalli's at local events. They're a huge part of the community and usually have a spot at festivals and gatherings. Check them out! Well worth the trip!
We had our company holiday party there. The crab cakes were great! Also, the pasta servings were just right not a mountain of pasta that will leave you feeling bloated. The bartender was excellent and friendly. All in all, it was the best holiday party we've had and everyone enjoyed their food.
We rode our bikes into town one nice Saturday, and were in the mood for pasta. This restaurant is a little too fancy for bike clothes, but my husband was in nice jeans and shirt, and I was in a sporty skirt. There were others in jeans but I would rather be better dressed next time. While not over-priced, they do expect you to get an appetizer to share, soup or salad, and entree. Loved the bread and basil oil which, and they brought butter upon request. We got the crab cakes appetizer and spinach salad with strawberries, both excellent. I got the lasagna - I rarely like restaurant lasagna, but I was in the mood, and this time I loved it. My husband enjoyed the spaghetti and meatballs. Took home half the lasagna. We'd go again for sure.
Dinner here is great with high quality wait staff and a beautiful interior. We prefer to dine in the second story, where it is a little quieter and more open. Food is delicious and well portioned. We buy gift certificates here as gifts for others. Enjoy!
A great place to eat. Perfect for family and the staff is just phenomenal, they're so kind and are on time whenever you need them. I went there with my grandparents and they just loved it aswell. The amazing vibe this place gives off just makes it great. I really do hope they can bring back the place after the flood. Wishing them the best
First time back since the reopening. And to top it off on Valentine's day!!! The food and service was top notch. Awesome to see and hear a piano man playing throughout our meal. What other restaurant gives you that ambiance? The answer is none!!!! I tip my hat to Portalli's for providing a great meal and ambiance. Thank you for bringing a old school restaurant experience.
