Portsmouth Fire Station 1

I have also seen this building referred to as "Fire Station 1" or "Central Station". The fire department website has excellent resources for learning more about the history of the fire department and fire fighting in the city of Portsmouth. In front of the fire station is the Vigilance memorial commemorating firefighters throughout the history of Portsmouth.

I have two friends that work in different restaurants in Portsmouth that have told me that the whole Firefighter staff has bought $250+ of takeout and left a $0 tip on multiple occasions. I appreciate the service of all firefighters so thank you for your service, but Portsmouth's economy relies on the local restaurants and this is no way to treat tip workers, especially with how hard they have been impacted by covid-19. As someone who has previously worked in the restaurant industry in Portsmouth to pay for college, I found this story to be quite disheartening as it is very difficult to earn a decent living when customers leave a $0 tip, especially when the order is several hundred dollars and takes a good bit of time to prepare; you are essentially spending 30-45 minutes dedicating your time to a single order without getting paid for your work. I hope that the fire department has a change of heart with the way they treat tip-workers because it really reflects poorly on our community hearing stories like this.

My thanks to the Portsmouth Fire Department and Bill Mc Quillen for bringing the covid-19 vaccine to Portsmouth. I am so grateful for his effort and follow up so Portsmouth residents don't have to travel to another town for the vaccine. Thank you, thank you. Julie Veazey

PFD did a great job at the State Street Saloon fire! They amazingly kept the fire from spreading to other buildings. Good job!
