Potter Stewart United States Courthouse

Description

The Potter Stewart United States Courthouse is a courthouse and federal building of the United States government located in Cincinnati, Ohio, and housing the headquarters of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio and the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Completed in 1938, it was renamed for Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart in 1994. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2015.HistoryThe building was designed and constructed in response to the demand for suitable and adequate quarters for the growing services of the Federal Government in Cincinnati. The previous Federal building on the site, completed in 1885, had grown too small. Construction was begun on November 30, 1936, and when dedicated in January 1939, the building housed 51 agencies of the Federal Government. The existing courthouse was at the time of its construction, Cincinnati's third Federal Building. The site for the first – the southwest corner of Fourth and Vine Streets – was bought in 1851 in response to a general demand in the city that scattered Federal offices be assembled. Construction of that first building took seven years and cost $339,183. Then, after 27 years of use, the site and structure were sold in 1879 for $100,000 to make way for the Merchants' Exchange.

beautiful building. this was a past US post office prior to being converted to a courthouse. still has an inside worthy of stopping by an seeing vintage po boxes or mailboxes.
My family attended my husbands citizenship ceremony at this court house. I was told to leave at the start of the ceremony due to my special needs child making noise. I wasn't given the chance to calm him, but they said nothing to the children in the seat directly in front of me literally wrestling. The door was quickly closed behind me so that I couldn't even witness this very important occasion from the hallway. When I walked the long hallway, turned making my way back , I was told " you need to be careful they opened the door ". The lack of tolerance and understanding from the staff was shocking and discriminatory on a day when they are welcoming new citizens to the United States. Clearly the staff are in need of training regarding children and people on the autism spectrum. If I could give 0 stars to this facility I would.
Due to recent regulations you can not park along the street in front of this building. About a block away there are meters on the street or a undergound parking nearby the building. The underground parking is costly but better than walking long distance. The building inside is beautiful art deco design built in the early 1900's that operated as a post office. The po boxes and clerk windows still left intact but not operational. This now operates as a federal courthouse. Be prepared to go through metal detectors and have your ID with you.
It's a courthouse. If you're an attorney, you think this one is pretty nice and the courtroom is fairly attractive. If you're not, you're not going to like being here.
