Poughkeepsie Yacht Club

Description

The Poughkeepsie Yacht Club is a small private yacht club based in the Hudson River Valley in upstate New York. The club is one of the earliest yachting institutions in America and founded in 1892. The club is located on the eastern shore in the heart of the Hudson Valley, on a part of the Hudson River about halfway between New York City and Albany. It shares a close proximity to the Hyde Park historic sites and the town of Rhinebeck. Its officers include a Commodore, Vice-Commodore, Rear-Commodore, Measurer, Secretary, and Treasurer.HistoryThe Poughkeepsie Yacht Club was founded on 1892 by a small group of working sailors and yachtsmen. It now has approximately one-hundred twenty "active" (boat owning) and "social" (non-boat owning) members.During the early years of the club's history, rowing played an important role fostering interest and membership. This led to the negotiations securing the first race of the "University Eights" (Intercollegiate Regatta) in June 1895. In addition to racing, yachting, and rowing, iceboating was popular with club members as well. The club field had as many as seven ice yachts, generally storing four in the boat house.Traditionally the Poughkeepsie Yacht Club has been a "working club," where members take part in maintaining the club facilities and grounds. Participation hours include activities such as the "all hands on deck" docks in and docks out as well as working on the annual events hosted at the club. Members may choose the committee with which they wish to be affiliated (i.e., docks, membership, house, grounds, moorings, entertainment, etc.)ClubhousesIn 1892, the club’s first clubhouse was established in a modest, building in Poughkeepsie, New York, on what is now the water front of lower Main Street in Poughkeepsie. The club leased a dock known as the "Sand Dock" from the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad company at a rate of $25 per year. The first clubhouse was built by May of the following year. The location was on the site of the old Revolutionary Ship Yard (or Continental Shipyard) at Ship Yard Point, now known as Fox's Point in Poughkeepsie. The first club house was a wooden structure twenty by twenty feet, and two stories high. With money in short supply, unusual fund raising methods were employed. For example, in 1897, the veranda in front of the house was added using the proceeds of the "Autumn Carnival". The Club has always been a "working man's club" and today aims to uphold the humble tradition.

Another great find! We were just passing through and needed a dock for the night. The members were so friendly and welcoming. The marina is right on the canal, so it can be a little wavy, but not bad. They have water and electric hookups. The restrooms and showers were very nice, and they offered us their washer and dryer for free! After cruising in the rain for several days, we were happy to have access to a dryer! There's nothing else around, but it made for a nice peaceful stop.
We are 50’ yacht & were docked on the outside wall. It was literally a bed of seaweed. We followed dock masters instructions for keeping it out of our strainers but there was so much of it that it was unavoidable. Our strainers were so clogged it over heated our generator on the next run down the canal. We had to stop & make repairs. The club is not dog friendly. Despite having pet bags we were told we were not to walk our dogs on the grass. We were sent to the railroad tracks. Our dogs were loosing their minds with the rabbits & we got multiple bug bites. There looked to be large stands of monkshood which is incredibly poisonous. Also the trains go super fast in NY so you and your dog need to stay off the tracks- no sooner did the lights go on & gates lower than the train was coming through. Asked if we could buy a beer at the clubhouse & they were less than enthusiastic. Had friends traveling later in the week- told them to avoid…$100 for the dock slip…really?
BEWARE!!! NO ADA SERVICE DOGS ARE ALLOWED AROUND PYC’S POUGHKEEPSIE YACHT CLUB PATIO/PORCH, CLUBHOUSE, GRASS AREA, AND PARKING LOT. NO EXCEPTION. PERIOD. Leashed Service dogs and pets are only permitted on docks to gain access to boats. To relieve themselves, the owner must walk the peripheral boundaries to the railroad track area. See picture. Since PYC is a private membership club, it does not have to comply with ADA regulations. Costs to modify for compliance are too exorbitant for PYC. On the upside, not all private yacht clubs along the Hudson River take that same position. Most welcome service animals. During my interview for membership, I questioned if ambulatory individuals with service dogs NOT needing any ADA modifications would be welcomed in the clubhouse, patio/porch grass area or parking lots. The answer was a resounding “No”. The PYC’s position is unyielding. My questions were perceived as challenging. As a person who volunteered many years as a puppy raiser, I was deeply disheartened to know even an ambulatory person with a service dog would be excluded. The commodore and membership chairperson felt it would open Pandora’s Box. Private clubs can exclude individuals who do not represent its expressed viewpoints or principles. So no surprise, my membership request was denied. The purpose of this review is to make transients boaters and prospective members know their position in advance to avoid any confrontation.
We stayed at PYC for three nights based on a suggestion in a blog and with no idea what to expect. This is not your ordinary yacht club. The members are active in all aspects of the marina operation. They are also the nicest, most helpful and accommodating people we have met thus far on the loop. When we arrived, the member that met us did an excellent job of getting us tied up in spite of a strong current's effort to keep us off the dock. He and his wife offered us leftovers in the fridge from the party earlier in the day and helpful information. The day we left, two members helped us pump out and leave the dock. The facilities may not be the fanciest, but they were more than sufficient for our needs and we'll take the friendly helpful attitude over high fa-looting amenities. Would come back here in a heart beat if we were in the area again. Also a great spot from which to visit the Vanderbilt and FDR historic sites, the Culinary Institute of America, and West Point.
Stopped here a few times on my way up the river. Members always friendly. Just a LONG walk to the food store.
