Powell Hall

Description

Powell Hall, formerly known as the St. Louis Theater, and Powell Symphony Hall, is the home of the St. Louis Symphony. It was named after Walter S. Powell, a local St. Louis businessman, whose widow donated $1 million towards the purchase and use of this hall by the symphony. The hall seats 2,683.The building is a contributing property of the Midtown Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places.HistoryThe building was originally called The St. Louis Theater. It was built in 1925 with 4,100 seats, designed by the Chicago architectural firm of Rapp & Rapp. The theater spent the first 40 years of its existence as a stage for live vaudeville performances as well as motion pictures. The last movie shown in the old theater was The Sound of Music in 1966. At that time, the building was acquired by the Symphony Society for $500,000, through a gift from Oscar Johnson, Jr.. After spending an additional $2 million to update and renovate the theater, the hall re-opened in January 1968 as the new home of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. The building is said to be haunted by the ghost of a man named George. He is supposedly seen in a white suit and white hat and is thought to be that of a former vaudevillian. He is said to play with the lights and the elevators.

Took my 11yo to her first symphony and we both loved it. The ushers and hosts were all helpful and encouraging. The music was incredible, the seats comfortable. We went early expecting parking issues but parked in the VA lot with no trouble.
Excited to experience the SLSO live for the first time. We went to a morning performance and were thrilled by the architecture, the history and the wonderful performance. All the volunteers were exceptionally helpful and friendly. We were treated to coffee and doughnuts when we arrived. Their ticket system flagged us as first-time guests and received a special welcome from one of their volunteers with a coupon to attend another concert of our choice. Powell Hall is 98 years old but it has been very well maintained. We learned that it will soon undergo a major two-year renovation to improve things like more bathrooms and elevators and improved wheelchair access. My only complaint was that the legroom of our seats was very tight. I understand that they are replacing the seating with roomier seats so hopefully that will make it more comfortable. The symphony was fantastic. Although we were in the second level the sound was excellent. We are excited to take advantage of their offer of another performance in the near future.
Exquisite is the only word I can use to describe this local landmark. From the moment the doors open a aire of sophistication hits you in the face. Living in modern America one seldom gets to see the old world and yet every single detail transports you back in time and instantly set a level of comfort one seldom finds outside of cultural influences. A must see!
The St Louis symphony is one of the best in the US. I love attending concerts here. The building is so beautiful and well maintained. So many great seats to choose from. Love that they have snacks and drinks for sale during intermission. Staff and ushers are very professional.
Went here with my girlfriend and her family for a Christmas music concert by the St Louis symphony. It was my first time here and they kept on telling me how amazing the place was. Well, they weren't wrong. The building is beautiful! Inside and out, so much detail. The concert was really well done as well and we all look forward to coming back. Actually, we will be coming back at the end of January for Harry Potter.
One of the most beautiful buildings I've ever been in is spectacular inside. We went here to watch my daughter perform in Joining Forces on stage at the Powell musicians from three military bands The US Air Force Mid-America band at Scott Air Force Base, The 399th band at fort Leonard Wood, and the 135th Army Band in Springfield team up with the winds brass and percussion of the St Louis Symphony Orchestra. It was really like a dream come true everyone there is very polite, afterwards in the reception area you're able to talk to the conductor and orchestra its really great so welcoming can't wait to go back! Thanks SLSO
First time visiting here after only living in the area for a few years. We've been wanting to come for awhile but finally made it for this holiday season. Purchasing tickets online was a breeze and we got a voicemail and email a few days before to let us know that masks and Covid vaccinations were required which was a great reminder. We came early, parked right next to the building and got in with no wait. Our seats had plenty of legroom and were very comfortable. The holiday decor was stunning and we were thoroughly impressed by the symphony. They even played a few more obscure classical pieces that I played years ago and still have the sheet music for so that was wonderful to hear again. The only downfall was that we had 3 different families sit in the two rows in front of us that brought very small children under the age of 5. They were a major distraction to us as they would not sit still and kept climbing back and forth across empty seats in front of us and making a lot of noise. Personally we never brought our young kids to anything like that when they were younger because we didn't want to bother other people. Sad that not everyone is as considerate. Other than that, we really had a wonderful time and are looking forward to coming back again very soon!
This venue is a historic relic, and it feels like stepping back in time when visiting here. The location has an abundant amount of nearby paid parking, and is in the heart of the Saint Louis downtown art district, near Saint Louis University Campus as well as many other venues. The Saint Louis Symphony orchestra always provides and excellent show no matter which one you are seeing. It's truly a sight to see this venue during the holiday season. They have a good concession stand but prices are steep. Bathrooms are fancy and always clean, however there is always a line. Good acoustics, so every seat is a good one. Staff is very helpful and friendly. As of the date this is posted, they are still requiring a mask and a covid vaccination passport/negative covid test.
Home of the SLSO, this Victorian-gothic structure hall is imposing inside and out. Now close to 100 years old you can see the imposing long wall mirrors and large chandeliers all around. The acoustic pars any other similar symphony hall. There is a small boutique shop tucked in the ground floor and Met bar on the first floor. The staff is extremely pleasant!! There are ample parking spaces around the hall including one large lot adjacent to the building.
Powell Hall was amazing! My family and I got dressed up and watched the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. What a show!! My daughters enjoyed it so much, they are already asking to go back. This was actually my first time in Powell Hall and I will most definitely be back soon.
