Pre-Health Commons at OU is focused on bringing together students with similar interests and using interactive simulations to foster the learning process.
Pre-Health Commons (PHC) was founded in September, 2015 by Biology major Tara Aziz at Oakland University with executive board representatives Nasam Jajou as Vice President, Reda Seblani as Treasurer, and Timothy Asmar as Secretary. The goal and purpose of the organization was to provide an interactive, clinically-concentrated club for students interested in going into a career in the health care field. The original organization focused in pediatric cardiology and was formerly known as Pediatric Heart Circle up until 2016 when the organization grew and chose to cover a full range of concentrations in the health care field, thus changing its name to Pre-Health Commons.
PHC focuses on all aspects of health care. A true luxury of this club is getting to delve into different specialties in the field alongside colleagues with similar interests and goals.
PHC covers and discusses a variety of techniques and approaches linked with multiple physiological systems including surgeries, examinations, procedures, psychological analyses, and emergency treatments. Students in the club experience interactive diagnostic simulation activities for students to practice identifying for certain illnesses, take part in examples of medical training, and develop thinking to benefit their future careers.
Featuring guest speakers in the health care industry, PHC also provides an inside-look on various careers during sessions dedicated to the step-by-step path necessary to reach specializations in the health care field. PHC allocates time to all key team members in the health care field field, not just physicians, so any Oakland University Student is welcome to join.
Some of our members include Pre-Medical, Pre-Physical Assistant, Pre-Nursing, Pre-Pharmacy, Pre-Physical Therapy, Pre-Occupational Therapy, Pre-Secondary Education, Pre-Dental, and Exercise Science students. If health care is something you are interested in potentially pursuing, it is suggested you attend one of our meetings, the dates of which can be found at our "Events" page.
