Keeping the History Alive! Our mission is to preserve and interpret the historic structures and cultural landscapes in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. We are also working on adaptive-use for many structures and farms.
With over 300 historic structures in the park our role is to assist the Park in preserving these resources. We do this through obtaining funding through support from membership, donations, grants, events, and corporations. In addition, we coordinate and implement hands-on volunteer projects each year. Volunteers join us in June, July and August for our projects on the mainland and the Manitou Islands.
Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear is the only partner of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore committed solely to preserving the historic structures and cultural landscapes within the Park.
PHSB restored the Olsen house which now serves as an interpretive center for the park as well as our office. The Olsen house provides a walk- through exhibit. We were the grantee for the first three years of the Port Oneida Fair to get it started. We continue to co-sponsor the fair through being on the planning committee and hosting demonstrations at the Olsen Farm site. In addition, we offer a walking Tour Guide of Port Oneida.
