Prisoners' Legal Services provides civil legal aid to people in Massachusetts prisons and jails. The office focuses on health and mental health care, conditions of confinement, segregation and isolation, and unlawful use of force.
PLS does not handle criminal trials, appeals, or post-conviction litigation challenging a conviction or sentence. The office concentrates on problems of health care, mental health care, guard brutality, segregation and isolation, and conditions of confinement (especially overcrowding).
Prisoners’ Legal Services promotes the safe, humane and lawful treatment of Massachusetts prisoners through civil rights litigation, administrative advocacy, client counseling, and outreach to policy makers and the public.
