Public Garden

Description

The Public Garden, also known as Boston Public Garden, is a large park in the heart of Boston, Massachusetts, adjacent to Boston Common. It is a part of the Emerald Necklace system of parks, and is bounded by Charles Street and Boston Common to the east, Beacon Street to the north, Arlington Street and Back Bay to the west, and Boylston Street to the south. The Public Garden was the first public botanical garden in America.HistoryBoston's Back Bay, including the land the garden sits on, was mudflats until filling began in the early 1800s. The land of the Public Garden was the earliest filled, as the area that is now Charles Street had been used as a ropewalk since 1796. The town of Boston granted ropemakers use of the land on July 30, 1794, after a fire had destroyed the ropewalks in a more populated area of the city. As a condition of its use, the ropewalk's proprietors were required to build a seawall and fill in the land which is now Charles Street and the land immediately bordering it (now a part of the Public Garden).Much of the landfill material came from Mount Vernon, formerly a hill in the Beacon Hill area of Boston. Initially, gravel and dirt were brought from the hill to the landfill area by handcart. By 1804, a gravity railroad had been constructed to rapidly bring material from the top of the hill to the marsh; today, Mount Vernon no longer exists, having been completely removed to be used as landfill for the Back Bay.

Boston Public Garden The landscaped, 24-acre Boston Public Garden, established in 1837, was the first public botanical garden in the U.S. The Public Garden contains lovely manicured paths, the famous “Make Way for Ducklings” statues, a 4-acre pond with swans and a variety of other birds, and several memorable statues throughout. You can enjoy a leisurely ride aboard the Swan Boats, pedal-powered gondolas which have been in operation during the summer months since 1877. Source: Trolleytours.com
Beautiful park. Lots of walking trails and sculptures. Lots of shade. Very clean. Nice information center and gift shop in the gardens as well with rest rooms.
Very beautiful, easy access, historical park with seasonal blooms and calming water features. Ideal for an impromptu picnic or relaxing sit on a bench. Family friendly with plenty photo ops. A quick walk through just a portion of this magnificent park will definitely return for further exploration!
Beautiful park! Lots of weeping willow trees to provide shade. Peaceful and relaxing if you want to have a picnic or read a book. There is also a swan boat ride that you can take in the small lake.
It was a lovely time. The weather was beautiful, there's a children's playground, swan rides, a carousel, and lots of small wildlife. Clean and family friendly. Playground: The children's playground is aimed for children on the younger side. Dog-friendliness: Lots of people walk their dogs here. Picnic area: Plenty of room to spread out and relax on the grass. Bring a book, headphones, or pack a lunch and enjoy the scenery. Theres lots of squirrels, chipmunks, and ducks that are friendly and used to people.
Boston Public Garden is such a beautiful place to walk, relax, bike, take photos. The garden is beautiful and feels so peaceful and refreshing. If you are in Boston you need to make a stop here and enjoy the view. The garden is free and you can bring your family and dogs. You can have a picnic, come to read a book or just seat and relax looking at the view. Something I didn’t see so am unsure if they have is restrooms. I had to go to the public library to use the restroom. Dog-friendliness: People come with there dogs to walk around. Picnic area: There is a lot of grass so you can definitely set a picnic in multiple spaces of the garden.
Absolutely beautiful. If I lived in Boston, I would come here regularly. With it being the end of April, pretty much everything is in bloom. The tulips were gorgeous. Loved all of the trees. Coming here has made me want to redo my yard. Love that it is within steps of the Green Line. It’s a must if you are visiting, but also if you live here.
Incredible park and garden, so nice. Full of ducks and beautiful animals and plants. You can’t avoid visiting it !
A beautiful large garden. There are Statues, flowers and more to see. Also the swan boats are there, but I was there early and they had not started running yet.
Beautiful morning. Beautiful place. Trees just coming to leaf and bloom. Swan boats were awesome. Loved seeing the Make way for Ducklings again. We had a great time. Dog-friendliness: They have free clean up bags at entrances.
