Radford University Bands present varied concerts on and off campus and at schools and conferences throughout the Mid-Atlantic region of the USA. Development of professional artistic performance skills, outreach to the music education community, and service to the University are the primary focus. Musicians may participate in the most select ensembles – Wind Ensemble and Chamber Winds – a campus Symphonic Band, Jazz Ensembles, and an athletic Pep Band.
Radford University's Department of Music offers major degree programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels and a minor in music at the undergraduate level. Courses are also open to students whose primary interests are in other fields. The undergraduate professional program in the department of music offers opportunities for students to prepare for careers as teachers of music in elementary, middle and secondary schools, for careers in music therapy, for careers in music business, and for advanced professional graduate study. The undergraduate liberal arts program offers opportunities for the study of music irrespective of specific career aspirations, for emphases that may meet the needs of individual students, and for preparation to study music at the graduate level. The master of arts program provides advanced study for musicians and music scholars in preparation of professional careers or doctoral study. The master of science program provides advanced study and opportunities for music therapists to refine existing competencies and attain new ones.
A SEAT FOR YOU !
If you have experience on a wind or percussion instrument, we hope you will consider performing in one of our fine ensembles. The Radford University Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band, under the direction of Dr. Wayne Gallops, provide music majors and non-majors with wonderful performance opportunities throughout the academic year. Each year the Bands prepare 6-8 on-campus concerts. The new Douglas and Bea Covington Center for Visual and Performing Arts serves as home to the RU Bands and features rehearsal halls and a state of the art concert hall.
Band members also perform in mixed Chamber Wind and Percussion ensembles, combine forces into a large Wind Symphony, and enjoy encouraging our division I Big South athletic teams through participation in the RU Pep Band.
