I highly recommend purchasing tickets at Horseshoe curve before you come here. Better value overall. The weekend I visited the museum's grounds were under construction so aside from the smaller indoor exhibit area the rest of the grounds were off limits to visitors. The fence has larger slits in it so if you're a railbuff or photographer like me it won't keep you from getting half decent photos. I'm sure the museum is great when operating in a fuller capacity but as it stands there's a little left to be desired until the grounds are re-opened to visitors.
Great stop. Glad we did. A lot of railroad history here. Will be back when we can spend more time and are able to go up to horseshoe curve.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo wait
Well worth the trip, especially if your buddy is paying. Fun for kids unless your kids are noisy. Our guide was great and well informed. Would like to see in the Summer.

Real interesting displays, gives u the feeling of what railroaders and people of Altoona experienced during the early days of railroading through the 1950's. Some areas were closed when I was there, I'm sure the outdoor equipment is just as interesting, but didn't have the time, only 1.5 hrs available for us that day.
We went for my son's birthday looking for a miniature train display..there isn't one but WOW! When I was younger I paid no attention to history. We all loved it!! Born and raised here having many generations working for Conrail and how things used to be was fascinating. Displays are beautifully done and it exceeded expectations
A very impressive museum that blew me away with what it had to offer. There's always room for improvement of course as the outdoor displays could use a good cleanup but for what it is the museum is a wonderful experience. I highly reccomend donating to their cause to help make an already great museum even better, plus the restoration of K4 1361 is something I'm highly looking forward to since the K4 is my favorite locomotive of all time
This was a great place for the family to spend about 1 to 2 hours depending how much detail you want to get into. Plenty to read about, but also plenty of audio and video things to listen to which I appreciated. Our 5yo enjoyed it and so did the rest of us. Just enough interactive items to make it fun for all. Definitely more than you might expect inside. It was early in the season and we weren't able to go into the yard and the roundhouse was closed so that was a bummer and couldn't find much info on when those items would be open. That was only negative at all.
