Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario

About

The Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario is the premier hands-on railway museum in the region.

Description

Railways were the key to the economic and social development of Eastern Ontario.

The advent of the railway transformed Eastern Ontario from a countryside of pine and hardwood forests into bustling communities of commerce, industry, and resource exploration.

Railway development peaked in the early 20th century and began a slow steady decline to this day.

The Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario aims to preserve the unique and expansive railway history of the area.

The Museum is housed in the 1912 Canadian Northern Railway (CNoR) Station, is a designated National Historic Site.

Situated on an 11 acre site that features, in addition to the CNoR Station, the CNoR Roadmaster's house, the Nolan's Corners Flag Station.

The collection of rolling stock includes a CNoR Steam Locomotive, a first generation Diesel Electric Locomotive, Boxcars, Passenger Coaches, a Dental Car, Cabooses (spanning 50 years), and our newest acquisition - a 1935 CN Snowplow.

Located in Smiths Falls, ON the Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario is operated by the Smiths Falls Railway Museum Corporation.

Mission

To preserve railway heritage for future generations.

We arrives in the late afternoon with only an hour to go. The price was affordable in my opinion. The trains are interesting with lots of information cards to tell you about them. I went with my 5 year old and he really enjoyed it. There was a playroom which was a big hit. We are excited to maybe do the high tea or an overnight on the train in future.
A nice little railway museum with some interesting exhibits. Sadly no engine in steam and no connection to a main line but worth a visit. Good value and an extremely helpful, friendly lady at reception on the day I visited. A small cafe serving coffee and other refreshments would be a bonus. I guess that these things can only happen if people patronise the museum. So put some money their way and take a look.
Such a great spot to visit for train lovers big and small. Lovingly maintained by dedicated volunteers, the entire place is clean, rich with nostalgia, and attended by knowledgeable people happy to share in your wonder. A must see.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
Some unique finds, super knowledgeable and friendly staff, with beautifully maintained historic displays make this museum a must see on any trip to Ontario, especially near Ottawa. Every exhibit had a purpose! Gotta love the Dental train car, the CP President's Cadillac, and many others. I'm originally from NYC, later eastern Pennsylvania and now Michigan I've been to several RR Museums, and this one was the most enjoyable overall.
Beautiful piece of history still preserved by mostly volunteers and staff. I have learned a ton attending the train event that was going on last weekend. So many fun things for the kiddos as well.Visited onWeekend
Hidden place in Smith Falls with a extremely well conserved Train Station - simply amazing- good rolling stock and you can sleep on one of their CaboosesVisited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
Beautifully maintained museum, thanks to volunteers and staff. Definitely worth visiting, especially during the events like Trainfest.
Went during Trainfest; they have a nice collection of historical trains and railroad equipment. Train rides in a caboose are available. And a wonderful scale model of what the station looked like in the 1950s.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
This is a fun museum that offers some very unique attractions, like the ability to rent one three different cabooses for overnight stays. They also have interesting exhibits, like the history of dental care that was offered to remote communities by a dentist that travelled to different areas by train. While this is a relatively small museum, and you can "see"" everything in an hour, it is better to take your time. If you walk through the exhibits patiently and learn the area's local history, I liked the section dealing with World War II, you will be well rewarded.
Nice little railroad museum. Multiple examples of caboose from a variety of eras and operators. A rare dental car, snow plow, and dining car. Worth the $10 + tax I paid.
