Description

The original Reata Restaurant located in the scenic Davis Mountains of west Texas offers the same fine dining and Legendary Texas Cuisine you can find at the Fort Worth location. Alpine, home to Sul Ross State University is near Texas tourist destination Big Bend National Park and the towns of Marathon, Fort Davis and Lajitas. Alpine is also a short drive from Marfa, Texas renowned both for the mysterious Marfa Lights and Donald Judd’s Chinati Foundation.

Reata, named after the legendary ranch in the James Dean classic movie, “Giant”, which was filmed in nearby Marfa, boasts the same high quality Southwestern dining you can find in Fort Worth. This is not food for the faint of heart, from Chicken Fried Steak to Calf Fries or the Pepper Crusted Tenderloin and Cowboy Rib Eye Steak, this is a dining experience not to miss.

Today, Reata Alpine remains a true destination restaurant, attracting loyal diners from miles beyond the charming converted farmhouse where our Legendary Texas Cuisine was born.

Open on a holiday, which is more than I can say for the other local restaurants. If you’re wanting to drink – take advantage of the happy hour. If you’re dining, be sure to ask for a drink menu as they won’t freely offer it. But right off the back, they’ll ask you if you made reservations. Supposedly fine dining. Menu selection is varied. If you have a nut allergy, or sensitive to peppers, this is probably not your place. Sidebar – we witnessed a woman order a jalapeño margarita, which she could not even drink because we overheard her say, “It was the spiciest thing I had ever had in my entire life.” I liked the pecan bread, my mate did not. For apps- we had calf fries, wedge salad and beef tenderloin with pecan mash tamales. Everything lacked salt. The wedge salad did not have any bacon, however, it did have Serano peppers. I could not taste any pecan in the tamale – and the beef tenderloin tasted like ground beef. We split the ribeye plate. I can only believe the corn was either frozen or out of a can. The cheese mashed potatoes were very gummy. No sear or salt on the steak. I watched my mate’s water glass diminish to empty with no offer to be refilled. We had to ask for water refills after we received the check. If it were cooler- go eat outside. Absolutely stunning.
We ate in the patio area, cause I had my dog with me. They came and took our drink order right away. When they brought our drinks they also bought a bowl of water for my dog. We had great service throughout the night and the food was excellent. One worker even brought some treats for my dog. Will definitely go back again.Food: 5/5
I highly recommend this restaurant. Only open during a limited time frame, make reservations if possible. The food here is better than great it is amazing. The quality of food here is high. The service is amazing and atmosphere is relaxing outside romantic inside. I am staring this place and coming again each time i am in Alpine Texas. Thank you for existing.
Don't be in a rush, the food is worth the wait. I had the Citrus Chicken and it was perfectly tender with outstanding flavor. The missus got the avocado and steak Caesar salad and I stole more than one bite, excellent flavor blend. The croutons were a surprise zing that put it over the top too! I'll absolutely be back to try other dishes as well!
Some nice food with home cooked vibes, not going to win any awards but tasty and filling. Presented well and good choices for drinks too. What lifts the experience is the cheerful staff, the cleanliness and freshness of the interiors and exteriors plus the relaxed comfortable vibe.Food: 4/5
I was very disappointed in the food. For the price, I was expecting much more. I ordered tortilla soup. It came in a bowl with 4 big lime quarters, a little chicken, cheese, a small piece of avocado & the broth was luke warm. The server tried his very best to make it right, but to be honest, it was broth poured over a pile of tortilla strips. It had very little flavor. I DEFINITELY will NOT be returning.
Reata is located in a renovated older home downtown Alpine. The patio is nicely decorated and murals are visible on the outer walls from the backward and through the windows. Indoor spaces have been well utilized to accommodate a large number of guests. The food is delicious. We went two days in a row, and everything we had was amazing. The multigrain biscuits and herb butter were mouth-watering. The jalapeño cilantro soup was creamy without being too rich. I liked the avocado chunks in the bottom. The bacon-wrapped stuffed jalapeños and grits were cheesy and flavorful. We had them both nights. The steak was cooked just right, the nachos were served with the cheese still melted, and the citrus chicken was tender and moist with a crispy crust. I had Mac and cheese the second night, and it was served on a hot skillet, so I had to let it sit a bit, but it was also creamy and cheesy. We had different servers each night, and one brought everything without asking while the other had to be asked plates, drinks, etc, but everyone was polite and friendly. Will definitely go again next time I am in Alpine!
Fort Worth location is much better. Bad good delivery timing. Stuff was definitely under a heat lamp. Would expect better for the priceFood: 3/5
I really wanted to love it, but the Chili Relleno entree was disappointing. The pepper itself was fried just right, but the filling could have easily been Velveeta. Don't get me wrong - I love Velveeta. But not by the forkfull. Hubs got chicken fried steak. It too was "fine". The patio was lovely and our server was terrific. The food just underwhelmed.
Excellent restaurant. The original location of the well known Ft. Worth restaurant. The menu changes seasonally, which is nice. You can always count on at least one steak offering. Make reservations. Parking is limited.Food: 5/5
