Sadly this place needs some attention. Low to no maintenance shows - site not maintained, our picnic table in over 3" of dirt/sand, trash everywhere including tires, and weeds over grown for a few items. The sites are not clearly marked. Many occupied sites have rigs/trailers that have nit and cannot be moved - unclear what they are doing with their sewage since the sites do not have sewer hook ups. Many also using more than 1 electrical outlet. Let me also mention to at least 4 loose dogs in the park. We had to carefully walk away with our dog as the loose dogs were approaching us barking and snarling. No collars and no one outside to call them off. The views are SPECTACULAR!! This park could be a gem. As of now, I'm glad we are here only one night. Due to the roaming dogs we could not sit outside with our dog because they kept running over. I understand that this is NOT a resort, but looking at the Google photos Red Rock CG was previously taken care of. I hope things can be turned around and make this park a clean, maintained park. Playground: None Dog-friendliness: UGH loose dogs that chased us and our GSD around the park. Very scary! They had no collars and no one was outside to call them. Don't know if they are dumped or owners live in park and don't care.
Took hike to church rock. Suggest taking left side of loop first. Very steep slanting steps up. It would be harder going down these. Wear good hiking boots with great gripping tread. Beautiful hike!
One of the locals told us about Red Rock park. We hiked up to pyramid point, it's 1.7 miles one way. Very nice. Park is mainly used for rodeos and that sort of thing and you won't find anything about their hiking trails on their website. It is definitely worth a visit.
Excellent! One of the most beautiful places in NM to visit. Be sure to check out the hot air balloon events they have as well. Freedom ride, flight cruise. July 29th. These photos are from that event.
One of the best view of NM in my opinion. The Cathedral Rock is very scenic. I made the trail all the way to the bottom of the Rock. The trail is little rugged but suitable for people with reasonable mobility. It is the perfect length and very enjoyable. The view keep changing all the way. I am jealous of people living near by.
Very pretty. Do not arrive after dark as it is kind of confusing. However we really enjoyed waking up there. Bathrooms were nice also
Amazing park. When we were their a rodeo/ horse event was taking place. We watched but were not part of it. The hike was fun but the sand made it a little bit harder. We saw many Gunnison’s Prairie Dogs and the burrows they called home. Some Kingbirds, Sparrows were also in the area also. BUT the best part was the Scenic Red Rod formations!
We stopped here for one-night and for $22...were very pleased. The train nearby only ran 1x at night and it wasn't that loud. The views are BEAUTIFUL and we got a treat of a hot air balloon gathering right there! The sites are pretty sandy and ours was a little undeveloped but not bad. Online reservations was simple and fast!
Campground looks great too but the hiking is free next door and was a great break from my 22 hour drive.
Nice park with good sized sites. Sites are fine sand, so bring a broom. There is some noise from I40 and from a rail line, but nothing terribly objectionable no rail crossings so no train horns. I was here to see the annular eclipse of 2023, and it was perfect for that. The scenery is great.
