Progressive, cooperative education for Pre-K and Elementary students.
Welcome to the Redwood Cooperative School. Established in 2014 by a group of parents who wanted to continue their children’s preschool Co-op education by founding a Cooperative Elementary School.
The philosophy of the Redwood Cooperative School is that children learn best when their innate curiosity, creativity and thirst for knowledge are indulged. Our programs are rich in the arts, maintain a consistent connection to nature, and offer an abundance of opportunities for the development of social, emotional, and life skills.
What sets us apart the most from other schools is our cooperative structure. The parents at Redwood Co-op facilitate all operations of the school; from administration (we are a board-run school comprised of volunteer parents), to maintenance, to assisting in the classroom and beyond, our school is run by our families.
Daily, our classroom operates with one head teacher, an assistant teacher, and a parent. Depending on the enrollment plan chosen, parents take turns helping out in the classroom on a rotating basis. Parental jobs may include running an activity, helping to clean up, general supervision and assisting the teacher in demonstrating a lesson. We encourage our parents to share their own talents, take on responsibilities like maintenance or become members of the board.
Currently Redwood Cooperative School offers a multi-age program for Pre-K through fourth grade. Our Pre-K-4 classrooms are setup with project-based learning centers, uninterrupted blocks of work time, and guided choice of work activity.
Children explore art, math, science, music and language — allowing each child to find his or her own way to construct knowledge independently. The multiage groupings facilitate peer learning, and the cooperative structure provides personal attention while fostering a sense of community.
Our vision is to grow each year, adding a new class of younger children as our current children progress.
