Republic (LIRR station)

Description

Republic was a station stop along the Ronkonkoma Branch which served employees of the Fairchild Engine & Airplane Manufacturing Company and the nearby Republic Airport from 1940 to the late 1980s. As part of a double-tracking project on the line, the station may be reopened.HistoryOriginal stationRepublic station opened on December 9, 1940, with simple wooden shelters for passengers. When electrification was extended from Hicksville to Ronkonkoma in the 1980s, the LIRR proposed to close the stops at Republic, Grumman, Pineaire, Brentwood, and Deer Park to speed travel times and to avoid the cost of building high level platforms at lightly used stations. The latter two were ultimately kept, but Republic closed in either 1986 or 1987 due to its low ridership and the high cost of new platforms. The old station platforms have been removed, but the two staircases down to Route 110 remain, though gated off. The preliminary design plans for a new Republic station involves reopening and reusing these staircases.Proposed reopeningAs part of the current project to add double track from Farmingdale to Ronkonkoma, the MTA is considering reopening Republic station. The reopened station would serve the Route 110 corridor, a major north-south commercial route. The station was cut from the project in 2010 due to budgetary issues, but revived in 2012.The MTA Board included money for planning and engineering in the approved 2015-2019 Capital Plan, and anticipates funding construction through a future Capital Plan.

Plenty of parking and no parking fee, at least on weekends. Trains are usually a bit late, but it's still cheaper and more reliable than driving directly to the city. I don't understand why head-in parking is a requirement here. It doesn't make walking around the lot safer and on weekends there's plenty of spaces. About 50% of the time the train from Farmingdale to Penn Station is unavailable because of construction or something so I'm forced to drive to another train station. The schedules are updated roughly a week in advance so planning ahead doesn't work either.
Lately the Penn Station bound LIRR is always late. They should consider giving riders a discount for the non-stop inconvenience.
Drove around for half an hour trying to find a place to park. When I finally did, it was to late and I missed my train. There was plenty of open spaces if I had a permit, but I don't live in Farmingdale. And the only pay spots require quarters, every other station I go to I pay with a card. Will never thing about going to this station again.
Good LIRR station. Has overhangs and shelters to protect you from the elements. There’s a bathroom in the waiting room during daytime hours. Is down the street from bars, so there are drunk people on weekends. Cabs are usually here but the cab service is a different review
As of February 8th, it doesn't appear that there was any attempt whatsoever at removing the accumulated snow and ice off the platform or steps. Even worse, there was no evidence of any snow or ice melt being present. Incredibly hazardous and unsafe.
Not having used public transit in a long time, I was leary...but tried it. Friday's trip went off without a hitch. Today was an utter disaster. Upon our return there was an accident between Ronkonkoma and Farmingdale. The employees said there would either be a bus to deliver us to our appropriate destination. When we disembarked, there were NO buses and none were coming. The station waiting area told us we had to get out. It was closing. And any movement would cause an alarm to go off and the police to be dispatched. Your stations should be more accommodating. If you offer trips then you should have your facility staffed. That way patrons aren't forced to stand out in the elements
Decent connectivity to the city. Limited peak trains back from NYC though. There is a long wait to get a parking slot at this station. Also, there are very few parking meters so unless you are here around 7 AM, you might be out of luck.
Small and useful. Easily accessible.
Clean and well maintained station. Parking is hard to find if you don't have a permit. Unfortunately, there was a nagging scammer/beggar at the time I was there. Of course not station's fault.
Station set up nice especially with all the new construction that has gone on in entire area that building is s landmark.
