Help us honor and restore the final resting place of some amazing veterans at the Washington State Soldiers Home Cemetery in Orting.
Help us honor the final resting place of some amazing veterans. The Washington State Soldiers Home Cemetery in Orting is the first state soldiers cemetery and was established in 1930. The cemetery had 2,265 total sites that consist of 1,632 upright markers and 633 flat markers. The cemetery is 4.75 acres and unfortunately it is in very bad shape. The cemetery is the final resting place of veterans from all over the United States. Veterans who served in the Civil War, Spanish American War, World War I, World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War! Among these veterans there are also 4 Medal of Honor recipients who are buried here.
There are headstones trapped in trees, headstones that you can't read because a tree has engulfed them or is directly in front of them, headstones that are sunk into the ground, misaligned, or simply so badly cared for that they are literally blank.
The purpose of this fundraising effort, which is sponsored by The Restore America Club, is to completely restore the cemetery, replace headstones, remove trees, completely realign and implement an anchoring system so they won't shift again. This project is a pretty big one but I have been inspired to take this on, I have seen the way our communities have come together on the clean up projects we have done. Please consider contributing to help us honor the final resting place of these American Heroes!
