Richmond Free Library

About

Mission: The Richmond Free Library provides resources and experiences that inspire, inform, entertain and connect members of the community throughout their lives.

Description

The Richmond Free Library was established in 1888 and is currently housed in the renovated Universalist Church, now owned by the Town. The staff includes one full-time librarian with a master’s degree in Library Science, one part-time children’s librarian and four part-time library staff members, who are paid by the town, and several volunteers. Since 1979, the library has met Vermont Public Library standards. In 2011, the Library joined VOKAL (Vermont Organization of Koha Automated Libraries) and was able to make its catalog available via the Internet. Major renovations designed to make use of the entire three story buildingwere completed in 2003. New music rooms on the third floor can now be used for music lessons, tutoring, and small group meetings, while the new community room on the second floor is available for larger meetings and assemblies and houses a high-quality grand piano. These renovations have created greatly needed community space in the heart of the village. This space is in regular demand by dance and yoga teachers, group meetings, private parties, and local committees and organizations. The library maintains priority access to this space.

The library provides programs for all ages and often coordinates with other organizations to make use of the community room for musical and other presentations. Every summer, children of the community enjoy special programming and art sessions.
